When Raj (Shahrukh Khan) & Simran (Kajol) first met on an inter-rail holiday in Europe, it wasn't exactly Love at first sight...but when Simran is taken back to India for an arranged marriage, Love makes its presence felt. Encouraged by his father Dharamvir (Anupam Kher - Bend it like Beckham & ER), Raj decides to fly down from London to not just win his Bride but her whole family and the blessings of her father Baldev Singh (Amrish Puri - Indiana Jones & Temple of Doom). All this while the celebrations for her wedding are in full swing. The longest running film in Indian Cinema released on 20th October 1995 and is still showing in Mumbai (India). It won every major award in the year of release & Shahrukh Khan shot to superstardom with this film and it defined the term "Bollywood".
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge Film Synopsis
Raj is a rich, carefree, happy-go-lucky second generation NRI. Simran is the daughter of Chaudhary Baldev Singh, who in spite of being an NRI is very strict about adherence to Indian values. Simran has left for India to be married to her childhood fiancé. Raj leaves for India with a mission at his hands, to claim his lady love under the noses of her whole family. Thus begins a saga.

Bollywood's Very Finest! ❤️This is my all-time FAVORITE film, even in comparison to all of the English-language movies I've grown up watching in the United States. I absolutely adore everything about it. This movie fun, adorable, seemingly simple but complex – yet it's the epitome of romance! I never thought that a combination of Switzerland, trains, cowbells, Harley Davidson leather jackets, cognac, mustard fields, and an unconventionally handsome "Raj" could make it to my list of relationship goals, but here I am. The film comes across rather lighthearted, but it has a deeper meaning to it that has struck the hearts of millions worldwide. The release of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was truly a pivotal point in India’s cinema, influencing nearly every romantic comedy/drama film that had followed it since 1995. Even now, after twenty years of its initial release, it is still being played in theatres, inspiring new generations of filmgoers in its wake.
I’ve seen a good portion of Bollywood films, but this one in particular is just so lovely and iconic - it's a jewel that every film enthusiast needs to see. As an English-speaker, I know it may seem a bit exhausting at first to know that you’d be reading subtitles throughout the entirety of the film, but don’t let that intimidate you. I felt the same way going into Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge but there were many moments that I subconsciously forgot about the foreign language barrier. Granted, I found the first scenes to be a bit slow and rather cheesy, but it took me by surprise as it continued to progress. Trust me - it is well worth the wait. I never thought a film so culturally different from my own would have such a lasting impact on me. It’s long in duration, yes, but also lovely in the sense that it shows how people can bend what is expected of them in their culture and faith while still respecting both. I think traditional values and morals are things that every family, culture, and religion struggles to cope with in today’s world, and this film certainly leaves a striking message pertaining to that issue.
