Jonathan Pryce ("High Sparrow," Game of Thrones) and Pauline Collins (Shirley Valentine) star in this hilarious new comedy that shows you don't have to be baked to make some Dough! Curmudgeonly widower Nat Dayan (Jonathan Pryce) clings to his way of life as a Kosher bakery shop owner in London’s East End. Understaffed, Nat reluctantly enlists the help of teenager Ayyash (Jerome Holder), who has a secret side gig selling marijuana to help his immigrant mother make ends meet. When Ayyash accidentally drops his stash into the mixing dough, the challah starts flying off the shelves and an unlikely friendship forms between the old Jewish baker and his young Muslim apprentice. Dough is a warmhearted and humorous story about overcoming prejudice and finding redemption in unexpected places.
An old Jewish baker struggles to keep his business afloat until his young Muslim apprentice accidentally drops cannabis in the dough and sends sales sky high.

It was okay, I guessIn the movie, an Orthodox Jewish man in Britain owns a bakery, and he hires a Muslim teenager to be an apprentice of sorts. One day, the teenager, who sells marijuana to get by, hides the marijuana into the dough when he sees cops coming into the bakery. Long story short, the bakery gets a lot more customers. It's a clever premise (based on an actual headline, as I understand), but when I saw this movie at a film festival, I couldn't help but edit it in my head. For example, the film uses a lot of dramatic irony, in that the audience knows the teen put marijuana into the dough, but for a while, he is the only character in the movie who knows. Setting aside the question of how all these people, including the bakery owner's young granddaughter, can eat these "baked goods" without getting sick, the movie could've worked better narratively if the first act was told from the bakery owner's perspective. Then it goes to the teen's perspective, and we see him put marijuana into the dough, and it becomes a revelation of sorts that has a lot more weight to it now that we've already seen a lot people eat the "baked goods." But overall, the movie was okay..Score: 3/5
