Craig Misery's reviewDirected by Bryan Bertino, who also brought us The Strangers, comes a highly emotional and tension filled ride. The Monster is beautifully executed on all levels. Tons of use of negative space, letting us think the Monster could be anywhere at anytime, filling the film with suspense and dread. The use of practical fx and lots of dark and rain filled scenes helped the tension build as well. The backstory really got to me and solidified the relationship between the two main characters, making you sad and hopeful at the same time. Zoe Kazan and Ella Ballantine are definitely two names to watch for. Overall I was floored by this film, and that usually takes a lot. I was surprised I hadn't heard of this one sooner. My only complaint comes in the form of wishing the monster looked differently on a creative scale. I've seen similar monsters in other films. They had a chance to bring something to the table that could have a lasting effect in the Creature feature world, but I don't see this one being remembered..Score: 4/5
Child TortureIn order to enjoy the scares, which are pretty good, you have to log a LOT of time watching a little girl in anguish. You watch her suffer parental serious neglect and abuse, you watch her terror as she sees the monster chew people up and listens to their hoarse screams, you watch her fear and grief as she confronts the possibility of losing her mother. If you dig long closeups of little girls with tears streaming down their contorted faces, this is the movie for you!.Score: 1/5
Refreshing Creature FeatureFinally a monster movie that combines a terrifying well acted story. If you love a horrific creature that even when you know it will strike still manages to scare you then this is your type of movie. Buy it!.Score: 5/5
One of the best horror movies I have seenI wasn't expecting much from this, but I was wrong. You get 2 horror movies in 1. The acting, photography, directing, music, sound, all was perfect. Why?This movie had so much potential. If there is a monster, alien, or any other supernatural being I am usually completely on board, even if the movie isn't that great. The monster was absolutely fantastic (the only redeeming quality; it was scary, very well created, and original. Unfortunately, the movie uses every opportunity to distract you from the reason everyone watched the movie, which was of course because of the monster (hence the title). Very disappointing..Score: 1/5
