Absolutely Oscar-worthyI really can't overstate how good this was. The script, the stunning cinematography, the subtlty of visual storytelling (the door between them, through the glass, during the interview), the chemistry among the actors, the obvious belief that the actors had in the material and at the top of it all, Sally Hawkin's acting. My God. I felt the world through every muscle movement in her face. Ethan Hawke was superb, and perhaps the greatest strength in his performance was to be a sort of base or foundation for Hawkins to work from. It was her film. And he gave her the platform to shine. We Need More Movies Like This...Oscar winning performances by Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke. Set on the beautiful island of Nova Scotia, a charming love story between a cast iron fisherman, Everett Lewis, and the sweet spirited Maudie Dowley who came into a lonely man's life, slowly melted away his iron fist and added the much needed color to his black and gray life. The psychology of color is definitely explored in wonderful detail through complicated emotions between two vastly different people and through the unpredictable detours of life. Touching storyMaud Lewis - afflicted with rheumatic arthritis, is a tiny frail woman, cared for by her parents but left to a mean-spirited aunt and cold-hearted brother on their death. Rather than shrivel under them, she strikes out on her own, getting a job as cleaner/cook for a hard fishmonger. They end up married in the one-room shack out on a county road that Maud turns into a work of art with her brilliantly colored primitive (think Grandma Moses) paintings. Discovered by summer people, Maud's fame as a painter grows, and yet she shyly and happily keeps selling her work from her shack, enjoying the simple act of creating her art. Her tough husband and she are together for over 30 years, tied by bonds of love that neither can easily express. The two leads are fantastic - no scene-chewing, just true emotions come through in characters that can't articulate or even easily show their feelings. Inspiring, touching. They didn't have much but they weren't poor in spirit..JBSCAScore: 5/5
2 days later I am still thinking about it.Rented this film to see Sally Hawkins who was phenomenal. Ethan Hawke was also great as her damaged curmudgeon husband.
