Where myth meets history. Where legend meets reality. The roads cross at San Antonio de Bexar and the small, ruined mission there: the Alamo. In the spring of 1836, nearly 200 Texans - men of all races who believed in the future of Texas - held the fort for 13 days under siege by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, ruler of Mexico and commander of its forces. Led by three men - the young, brash Col. William Travis; the violent, passionate James Bowie; and the larger than-life living legend David Crockett - the Texans and their deeds at the Alamo would pass into history as General Sam Houston's rallying cry for Texas independence and into legend for their symbolic significance. Historical action western detailing the 1835-36 Texas revolution before, during, and after the famous siege of the Alamo (February 23-March 6, 1836) where 183 Texans (American-born Texans) and Tejanos (Mexican-born Texans) commanded by Colonel Travis, along with Davey Crockett and Jim Bowie, were besieged in an abandoned mission outside San Antonio by a Mexican army of nearly 2,000 men under the personal command of the dictator of Mexico, General Santa Anna, as well as detailing the battle of San Jacinto (April 21, 1836) where General Sam Houston's rag-tag army of Texans took on and defeated Santa Anna's army leading to the independence of Texas. "The Alamo" retells the events surrounding that battle from multiple perspectives on both sides of the Texas-Mexico border. John Lee Hancock (The Rookie) directs a cast that includes Patrick Wilson (Lt. Col. William Travis), Jason Patric (James Bowie), Billy Bob Thornton (David Crockett), and Dennis Quaid (Gen. Sam Houston).

The John Wayne Version Is Much BetterThough Billy Bob Thornton does a good job as Davy Crockett, I recommend the John Wayne Version as it just is much better and gives the story more depth. Richard Widmark did a better job as Jim Bowie as well, sorry guys but the other is a better film..Score: 2/5

Santa Anna was a MonsterFor those who want to rewrite history, you may not like this movie. It tells the truth about a power-crazed dictator who had no respect for the rule of law nor the brave Texans, both American-born and Tejano who fought against him. Some reviewers would have you think that somehow the Texans were oppressors and the Mexicans were somehow the oppressed. You decide, there were a little more than 100 volunteer defenders at The Alamo, slaughtered by more than 1,500 hundred professional soldiers of the Mexican army. Gosh, those Mexican soldiers must have really felt subjugated! You really see the "oppression of the Mexicans" as the Mexican army band plays while the cannons shell the mission fortress the heroes defend for 13 days. Watch this movie and learn the meaning of real sacrifice and heroism. The Alamo serves as a fantastic reminder of the great debt we owe these heroes. This is a good film by any measure..Score: 4/5
Just AmazingI am 13 and I first what he'd this movie in my history class but of course we never got to finish it. So I went home, got on my ipad and rented it and overall it is an amazing movie filled with facts. I wish I could purchase it. Don't mean to be a hater but...Hey good movie, but since i'm mexican myself and irish, the general american population were technically racist toward irish people, anyone who wasn't protestant, and wrongly took the texan territorry from mexico. they treated the irish people unfairly for two reasons because of their race and their Catholic religion. some irish then moved to mexico to fight in the mexican-american war becuase they were at least accepted there. but they were hung for treason but i guess thats what americans wanted them to happen to them. at least they fought with heart against hate. i will though say that the mexican law for texan citizens was a little unfair. but i still got to feel for both the irish and the mexicans because they seemed more like the bad guys in the movie when they really weren't? oh yeah and for those of you who dont believe that any irish men fought along sode the mexicans in that war, google san patricios, spanish for st. patrick. movie was ok though..Score: 3/5
The AlamoTexas freedom I think not. There is nothing glorious about the Alamo. The Alamo was on Mexican soil and was taken by force from the Mexicans. Same thing the British were trying to do to the American colonies, guess that would not have gone down well. Guess its okay if we are the ones doing the taking. Man, revisionist history all for the sake of "glory". Silly.Forget the movie, read "The Gates of the Alamo" much better history and truly moving account..Score: 1/5
