Afflicted with a terminal illness, John Bernard Brooks (John Wayne), the last of the legendary gunfighters, quietly returns to Carson City for medical attention from his old friend Dr. Hostetler (James Stewart). Aware that his days are numbered, the troubled man seeks solace and peace in a boarding house run by a widow (Lauren Bacall) and her son (Ron Howard). However, it is not Brook's fate to die in peace, as he becomes embroiled in one last valiant battle.

An unforgettable opusJohn Wayne plays an aging gunfighter dying of cancer while himself dying of the disease off-screen. There is an reverence and honesty in this performance I have seldom seen in moviemaking. The overt swagger that belies John Wayne's humanity in previous films now serves to frame a larger story of personal struggle and dignified resignation. The great irony of this film is Wayne's genuine vulnerability here shows him at his most heroic. This is one of the greatest Westerns of all time..Score: 5/5
A Wonderful MessageWhat a classic Western for an aging John Wayne to star in! It was very touching to see a powerful man with a legend, and a good heart, come to terms with his own mortality, along with that he only has strangers in his life to rely upon. This Western is very much worth adding to your iTunes collection..Score: 5/5
The ShootistThe most touching and emotional of John Wayne's films. It emphasizes the fact that Mr. Wayne was a hero on and off the screen. He was able to portray a character whose fate he shared with honesty and dignity. He was not perfect in life but his characters stood for what is important in life: freedom, family, and faith. It is why his films endure. The Shootist is an excellent example..Score: 5/5

John Bernard BooksDespite the typo on iTunes (saying Wayne's character's last name is Brooks --- it is Books), this is a fine western. Wayne's last movie playing a gunfighter dying of cancer when everyone knew he was dying of cancer in real life is well acted. The list of co-stars is stunning. This movie resonates with the passing of the old west into modern times where people were self reliant, honest, and were taken at their word. Books was no exception. The various angles of the story are great - from those thinking he's just a killer, others who admire him, others that want to settle an old score, and those who want to be the one to raise their reputation by killing him in a gunfight. The final culmination is very well done. From opening to closing, it's a montage of classic western themes. Highly recommend!.Score: 5/5
John Wayne rides into the sunset for one final time...I'm a big John Wayne fan, and each time I see "The Shootist", deep down, I feel like I want to cry because even as his character in the film was dying, in real life, Duke was dying of cancer. This movie is, without a doubt, one of the most defining moments in Duke's long film career! And seeing him cast with his "Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" co-star Jimmy Stewart and his "Blood Alley" co-star Lauren Bacall is reason enough for any John Wayne fan out there to buy it here on iTunes!
