Trevor Reznik (Christian Bale) hasn't slept in a year. The shocking deterioration of his physical and mental health has made his every waking moment an unrelenting state of confusion, paranoia, guilt, anxiety and terror. His only solace from this living nightmare comes from an affectionate prostitute (Jennifer Jason Leigh). When cryptic notes turn up mysteriously in his apartment and when hallucinations of a co-worker that no one else sees causes a gruesome machine shop injury, he embarks on a journey to find out whether there is an elaborate plot to drive him mad or his fatigue has simply robbed him of reason. The more he learns, the less he wants to know.

Can't argue Bale's acting skill...But this movie bites. There is a twist at the end, but it simply doesn't all add up. The weight loss is extreme and I often found it to be distracting. Hallucinogenic TripI don't write movie reviews to give away the story. Why take away the suspense? But the title of this review will give you a strong hint of what happens in the end. The story is brilliant and a serious mind bender. Watch carefully because everything (and I mean everything) that the main character, Trent Reznik (which is a little to close to NIN frontman Trent Reznor), interacts with, from people to everyday objects, holds significance to the truth which is revealed in the closing scenes. Who is Ivan? Who is Nicholas? Who is Maria? Are they real? See it if you want to find out, because Christian Bale is brilliant as usual. He is truly my favorite actor and he has never disappointed since I first saw him as a child actor in Empire of the Sun. Shot for the moon, but didn't even make it to the starsThis movie had so much potential. I thought the twist could have been good, however it was presented very poorly. The ending was predictable, and several times the movie was just plain unrealistic.
However, there are some great parts of the movie. The acting was great, but for me the best part was the symbolism. The movie's chockfull of symbolism, and it would have made the movie a lot better if only the ending was harder to guess.
Overall, this movie tried to be a blockbuster mind-bending thriller, and failed. It's a good movie to watch on a dark rainy day, especially if you're a fan of Christen Bale..This_is_NOT_my_nicknameScore: 3/5

Amazing!This movie was one I overlooked as it didn't originally appeal to me. Was I ever wrong! Christian Bale's transformation is nothing short of disturbing. The movie is also full of twists and keeps you on your toes. It's not a fast faced, blown em up movie but if you're looking for a Hitchcock type movie this is for you. Svou roli v ní hraje děsivá nehoda, již Trevor zavinil (nebo snad ne?), kolegové z práce, Trevorova oblíbená call girl Stevie, tajemný plešoun Ivan a sympatická číšnice Marie. Kdo z nich je však skutečný a nic nepředstírá? Je Trevor obětí nějaké podivné hry, nebo je on sám bezcitným manipulátorem?
