Winner of the Best Picture and Best Screenplay awards at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival, "You Can Count on Me" has been hailed as "the best American movie this year." Laura Linney, in her Oscar nominated role, and Mark Ruffalo star as grown-up siblings who couldn't be more different. While conservative Sammy (Linney) stayed in her quiet hometown, rebellious Terry (Ruffalo) was on the road, drifting in and out of trouble. When Terry suddenly comes to visit, his presence has a profound influence on Sammy's world. As Terry forms a special friendship with Sammy's precocious eight-year-old son, Rudy (Rory Culkin), Sammy rediscovers her passion for life, entertaining a marriage proposal from her boyfriend (Jon Tenney) while having a fling with her boss (Matthew Broderick). But when Terry's behavior become disruptive, Sammy must finally confront the choices of the past...and make new ones to renew her family's future.
A single mother's life is thrown into turmoil after her struggling, rarely-seen younger brother returns to town.

Not that greatWhen i saw that this movie had such high reviews i was very excited to buy it.....and now i dont know why. i think the plot could have been so much greater and more impactful with its "life lesson" but it really just left me flat. I wouldnt but this movie.Score: 2/5
RefreshingThis movie is absolutely refreshing because it's not a Hollywood movie with a Hollywood plot. It's about real people, their problems and how they deal with them. I'm still thinking about it several days after I watched it..Score: 5/5

Mildly entertainingThis film was entertaining and worth watching, but I wouldn't agree that it is necessarily a proper depiction of 'American' sibling interaction. At least in my experience. I don't know of any siblings that interact in such a way (myself included). Nonetheless, this is a good, dysfunctional, entertaining film. Enjoy!.Score: 3/5
Honest, Touching, Funny and AuthenticAn amazing gem of a film. "You Can Count On Me" is an incredible story about loss, familial love, coping with one's own failings, and being alone. The acting is so well done, I was drawn into and held in the story. Laura Linney and Mark Ruffalo embody their characters so completely, the actors melt away. Matthew Broderick and Jon Tenney play equally engrosing support roles. The film overall is artful and well-conceived. The soundtrack complements the sometimes whistful, sometimes brutally honest, sometimes playful tone of the whole film. The cinematography Probably one of the most striking elements of Lonergan's movie is how true-to-life the stories maintain. The characters remind us of our own flaws: our inconsistencies (despite our efforts), our floundering attempts to cope with our lot and our failings, wrestling with somehow finding ourselves alone. The remind us of our own desires: to simply be happy, to love and be loved. And in the end, follow our truest sense of direction in life. One of the best movies I've ever seen. THE best film I've ever seen about coping with being in an modern American family..Score: 5/5
No hollywood endingThis film is subtle, like life. The characters are genuine and breath on their own. There are no hollywood manglings and cliches to derail it. This should have won the Oscar for best writing, and I reckon Linney came in a close second to Julia Roberts in the oscar voting also. (Movie Fact: Although they did not have a scene together, Rory Culkin, younger brother of MacCauley Culkin and MacCauley's movie-sister in Uncle Buck, Gaby Hoffman, were both in this film..Score: 5/5
Great DialogueThis is one of the most insightful movies I have even seen. The camera work is so subtle and so is the acting. I had never seen or heard of Mark Ruffalo before and I was instantly a fan. Matthew Brodercick is at his best . I agree with another reviewer how this was not nominated for an Oscar is a big surprise. A great great film.Score: 4/5
A ClassicI'm amazed that this movie wasn't nominated for any Oscars. No joke, this is my favorite movie of all-time. And the great thing is that it can be watched over and over without losing its charm. The characters are developed with such grace, the bucolic scenery is beautiful and the flow of the movie is unmatched in recent times. One of the best movies of the last ten years..Score: 5/5
