Some movies never die. Ever.Too many movies date themselves in one way or another. Either through visuals, dialogue, or even just plain general content. Even period pieces. This classic is still fresh, even for a movie that will soon be 50 years old! There are some classics that are done so well they will never die, no matter how many times Hollywood tries to reboot them to sell more tickets. Think of 1950’s Ten Commandments and Ben Hur, 1960’s Lawrence of Arabia, Hawaii, Doctor Zhivago and other epics that were done so well the first time. Zeffirelli’s Romeo & Juliet is among this elite genre. Though the movie itself isn’t an epic production the content is. Some may say the acting is melodramatic at best and the dialogue too difficult to follow. But this is the point: not only is it “the greatest love story ever told”, it’s the greatest “Shakespeare movie ever made”; the acting is done in the style of a stage play, the dialogue is as Shakespeare wrote it and the visuals… oh the visuals. If you want a fantastic movie that will never become dated and is always exciting to watch you cannot go wrong with this one..Score: 5/5
A Classic showing timeless LoveA love so strong that it hurts; what a story this is and what a classic this movie is also. Watching this I keep wishing I were Romeo so that I would find myself embracing Juliet and thinking of nothing else. Olivia Hussey is stunning. Both her and Leonard Whiting fulfilled their roles perfectly. That is a testament to how well this movie was directed and what a great job the actors did in playing Romeo & Juliet. Any other version of Romeo & Juliet will inevitably compare itself or be compared to this one. fjm.Score: 5/5

Greatest story everI watched this movie in high school 30 years ago. I actually stood up in class during the sceen where Romeo drinks the poison and yelled "DON'T DO IT " It was funny how many of us football players had something in our eye when we came out of the class. Wow ITS IN COLOR?!I had no idea movies were in color in 1968. I though it was black and white. And I Cant stand shakespeare stories. Best Adaptation there is.This is my favourite version of Romeo and Juliet. Zeffirrelli is a genius. What made this film a box-office hit is the fact that Zeffirrelli casted two teenagers for the lead roles. Whiting and Hussey portrayed their characters so well. You can sense Romeo's vulnerability and Juliet's innocence in this film. Remember those "puppy love" days? This movie brings back all those memories and I think that's the whole point of Zeffirrelli remaking the play. Zeffirrelli wanted us to relate to the characters, because love is a foolish thing and it'll hit you anytime. Also, Zeffirrelli takes advantage of that colour picture. For something that was produced in 1968, you would think the picture is crappy, colourless and distorted. But, no!! It was wonderfully filmed and the custumes were all wonderfully made..Score: 5/5
