A classic tale of redemption, this film features a volatile coach and a former star player-turned alcoholic leading a small-town basketball team on an improbable run to the Indiana high school championship game. Coach Norman Dale encounters several hurdles in his path: a feisty teacher determined to keep the best player from going out for the team, a town chock full of second-guessing fathers, and a group of undisciplined athletes. Story inspired by the Milan (Indiana) Indians' state title of 1954. Nominated for two Oscars and hailed by Sports Illustrated and ESPN as one of the best sports movies of all time, this triumphant tale of a high school basketball team's long-shot attempt to win the state features "fast-break cinematography” that catches the pace of the game.
Failed college coach Norman Dale gets a chance at redemption when he is hired to coach a high school basketball team in a tiny Indiana town. After a teacher persuades star player Jimmy Chitwood to quit and focus on his long-neglected studies, Dale struggles to develop a winning team in the face of community criticism for his temper and his unconventional choice of assistant coach: Shooter, a notorious alcoholic.

Homie don't play that - he plays for CoachA hackneyed plot and thematic contrivances almost tips the scales into unwanton and unforgiveable triteness in this sports "classic". Things fall into place all too smoothly for Mr. Hackman and his ballyhooed Hoosier H.S. basketball players. A drunk played by Hopper is a plot contortion that is wholly unncessary and really is the straw that broke this reviewer's back enough to pan my score of this semi-inspirational hoop story down to barely 3 stars. I like a good emotional and carthartic film that comes together as a win for the "good guys". Heck, I like even to shed a tear or two in a movie on the caliber of "Field of Dreams", "Rudy" or "Without Limits" (look it up - great flick about Prefontaine). However, I don't like it when I see it coming a mile away, and the director rubs my face in it. Everyone is a hero, down to the idiot who still shoots free throws "grandma" style. Seriously? Am I supposed to feel sorry for that dolt? And, can Jimmy EVER miss a shot? The despicable love interest for da Coach reaks of Hollywood wholesomeness thrown in to cater to the female "voice" in this film otherwise dominated by men. Is that such a bad thing? A boy and his ball, shooting hoops with Pa, day in and day out, just to have the chance to play for a team in the Hoosier state..Score: 3/5

A timeless classicFrom the opening credits, the beautiful music and breath-taking photography, as Norman Dale drives through the Indiana cornfields and into Hickory, you are pulled in. The character development and plotting, plus the believability of the boys on the team, are dead on. Gene Hackman is an American icon and Barbara Hershey was magnificent as a woman of integrity and small town Midwestern values. The only thing in the entire movie that bothered me - still, after a dozen viewings - is Dale's insistence to pass the ball four times before taking a shot. As a gym rat and former sports columnist I never did understand that. You might find the perfect shot opportunity after two passes....Score: 5/5
