A teenager with a death wish and a 79-year-old high on life find love in Hal Ashby's cult black comedy. Deadpan rich boy Harold (Bud Cort) keeps staging elaborate suicide tableaux to get the attention of his mother (Vivian Pickles), but she keeps planning his brilliant future for him instead. Obsessed with the trappings of death, Harold freaks out his blind dates, modifies his new sports car to look like a mini-hearse, and attends funerals, where he meets the spirited Maude (Ruth Gordon). An eccentric to the core, Maude lives exactly as she pleases, with avid collecting and nude modeling among her many pursuits. To the disgust of Harold's relatives and the befuddlement of Harold's shrink, Harold falls in love with her. As lilting Cat Stevens tunes play on the soundtrack, Maude teaches Harold a valuable lesson about making the most of his time on earth.
The young Harold lives in his own world of suicide-attempts and funeral visits to avoid the misery of his current family and home environment. Harold meets an 80-year-old woman named Maude who also lives in her own world yet one in which she is having the time of her life. When the two opposites meet they realize that their differences don’t matter and they become best friends and love each other.

Best movie EVER, hands down!This movie is an ultimate classic. It is about Harold, a depressed, death-obsessed 20-year-old man/child who spends his free time attending funerals and pretending to commit suicide in front of his mother. At a funeral, Harold befriends Maude, a 79-year-old woman who has a zest for life. She and Harold spend much time together during which she exposes him to the wonders and possibilities of life. After rejecting his mother's three attempts to set him up with a potential wife, and committing fake suicide in front of all of them, Harold announces that he is to be married to Maude. However, Maude has a surprise for Harold that is to change his life forever. Watch the movie to find out!!.Score: 5/5

NY Times ReviewWho hired Vincent Canby? Anyway, creepy, off-putting and aggressive are all words we might use to describe an elderly person who is sexually active. This small detail seems to have distracted a highly paid movie critic from the NY Times from the true beauty of Harold and Maude, embodied in Maude's ability to solve the problems in Harold's life over a hookah hit, a feat both Harold's mother and his oddly similarly dressed psychotherapist could only dream of. At the heart of this movie you will find the story of an elderly woman capable of nearly anything helping a young man to see the transience of life as both beautiful and fulfilling. Dare I ask if Mr. Canby will be sexually active at the age of eighty or will he not, for some reason, find sex to be a need to be met? Age is merely a mask worn by someone like Maude who will remain timeless regardless of age. And Mr. Canby, "It's best not to be too moral; it cheats you out of life." - Maude.Score: 5/5

A Great Movie but really... why can't I just buy it?Harold and Maude is one of my favorite movies ever. It's extremely sweet but has some good laughs in it too. I really want to just buy it for my Ipod and not ave to continously rent it, so I plead with you Itunes! Make this movie available for straight out purchasing. Not as great as I once thoughtI'm less enamoured with this this film than I used to be, which isn't to say that I don't like it so much as to say I no longer love it. I like Ruth Gordon, and I'm very fond of her performance in the film. It's Maude that I have a problem with. The idea of a wacky, exuberant free spirit woman bringing new life to a guy with emotional issues is hardly original ... and wasn't in 1971. There were dozens of movies made around this same theme at the time. The idea of the man being young and the woman being old was certainly original. but that's really where the originality stops. Characters like Maude tend to confuse self-centered energy with a kid of life spirit, and she plays that way to me. I don't believe that she ever really stops thinking about herself long enough to truly care about Harold, and the ending really confirms that feeling for me..Score: 4/5
Perfect movieThis was my yardstick to determine if my friends should be my friend. If I showed Harold and Maude and they did not enjoy , understand, see the sheer beauty in the film and its meaning. I did not think we could be friends. I think and wish we were all as enthusiastic abt life and Maude. I try and be Maude every day. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the movie. And the music is perfect.
