Young hobbit Frodo Baggins, after inheriting a mysterious ring from his uncle Bilbo, must leave his home in order to keep it from falling into the hands of its evil creator. Along the way, a fellowship is formed to protect the ringbearer and make sure that the ring arrives at its final destination: Mt. Doom, the only place where it can be destroyed.

Hobit Frodo totiž zdedí po svojom strýkovi Bilbovi prsteň, ktorý ho postaví do súboja so silami zla, reprezentovanými krutovládcom Sauronom. Ten chce za každú cenu získať prsteň, pomocou ktorého sa môže stať neobmedzeným pánom Stredozemia. V snahe zabrániť jeho plánom sa musí Frodo spojiť s ďalšími bytosťami a spoločne sa vydávajú na cestu, na konci ktorej sa im - ako dúfajú - podarí prsteň raz a navždy zničiť...
