Woody Allen portrays a very successful television writer who is tired of churning out pap comedy, and sets out to write a serious novel. He can make people laugh, but can he make them feel? Allen seems also set on collecting for himself every neurosis known to humankind. He sometimes lives with teenager Mariel Hemingway, but their age difference is producing guilt. Introduced to Diane Keaton, Allen finds her annoying, aggressive...and fascinating. He leaves Hemingway, however, Keaton returns to her former lover, Allen's best friends, and they become "just friends." Allen's ex-wife (Meryl Streep) has written a successful book, "Marriage, Divorce and Selfhood" --it turns Allen into a worldwide weirdo and explains her newfound lesbianism. When the abandoned Hemingway is about to leave the country to finish her education, Allen realizes the depth of his love for her.
Manhattan explores how the life of a middle-aged television writer dating a teenage girl is further complicated when he falls in love with his best friend's mistress.

One of the greatest movies everClassic Woody Allen. Brilliant, funny, great acting, overall a great movie. Highly recommended. One of the best Woody Allen movies, up there with Annie Hall. Watch it!.Score: 5/5
I lasted 30 minutes"Manhattan" is a boring movie. I had to work to make it through the first 30 minutes and after a few long pauses decided not to waste my time watching the last hour. Yes Woody Allen has a few funny moments and DIane Keaton is pleasant to view, but your time would be better spent reading and subsequently contemplating Sartre's "No Exit.".Score: 2/5
My favoriteI saw this film when my university in Colombia organized a woody allen festival in 1984; I like it since then, as was the fist time outside my philosophy class where the name of Kierkegaard was mentioned, and he is mentioned a lot in Allen's films. It has a great plot and lines and capture the stressed meaningless lives of the American people..Score: 5/5
One of the best films ever madeWoody Allen has made so many brilliant films (and a few not so brilliant), but this is definitely one of his very best. It's a romantic comedy, but a little more grown-up than his (also brilliant) Annie Hall. I highly recommend it to everyone!.Score: 5/5
One of the Greatest Works of Art of the 20th CenturyFor some reason, Allen did not want the film released, which would have deprived the world of one of the major works of the 20th century. Thankfully, the studio released it anyway. After Allen had won for Annie Hall, he was deprived of Oscars for Manhattan, although the film clearly should have won the Academy Award that year for, well, everything. The city is a major character in the film, unlike any film except maybe Chinatown. Mariel Hemingway is simply as stunning as the black & white cinematography by Gordon Willis, the Gershwin music, and the editing. The moral sweetness, contrasted by the grind of modern life, is breathtaking. Allen's confrontation with Michael Murphy (and the skeleton) could only be topped by his final scene with Hemingway. Then there is the scene by the Queensboro Bridge at dawn! Well, you need to see this one on a very, very big screen... Then you will be carried away to 1979's Manhattan..Score: 5/5
A True ClassiqueThere are too many reasons why you should watch this film. All I can bring myself to say, is that most humans are capable of identifying reasons why they like or dislike a film. Classic, timeless but even Allen himself didnt like itI thought this was one of the best movies ever, and Woody Allen's finest work, surprisingly he did nto truly care for it and that's a mystery in itself. This film is as beautiful as it is witty, it has stood the test of time and should be immortalized in cinema history.Score: 5/5
A beautiful film to look at, evocative pathosI absolutely adore this film from Mr. Allen. The soundtrack, the cinematography, the superb acting from the cast and the storyline (never an old one; it just gets more mellow with time). I JUST WISHED YOU COULD BUY IT ONLINE TO KEEP, my only complaint. I really want to own this movie as part of my Itunes movie library along with his other brilliant work: Annie Hall. I hope Itunes or truly the distributor will actually allow these films to be released for purchase and not rent only. My only complaint. This film is sublime, always will be..Score: 5/5

Yes. Yes. Yes. And no.There are visual aspects of this movie that are among the best of any films ever made, especially those that took place in New York. The opening sequence is breathtaking. Art and poetry. The best of the genre. And then, it drifts. Not just a little creepy. But sort of like Manhattan Murder Mystery without the irony. If you like Woody Allen, this one is a must. But Annie Hall, Hannah and Her Sisters, Purple Rose of Cairo, Radio Days and Midnight in Paris are better, wittier, more entertaining. I think his best film is Crimes and Misdemeanors. Which is flat out disturbing when it isn't hysterical. Why the bad guys win..Score: 4/5
