Oscar nominee Kenneth Branagh and Oscar winner Emma Thompson give dazzling dual-role performances in this supernatural-tinged romantic murder mystery. Mike Church (Branagh) is a L.A. gumshoe with a knack for tossing off wisecracks and tracking down missing persons. But Church doesn't have a clue when he's hired to help a beautiful amnesia victim (Thompson) tormented by blood-curdling nightmares. Then an eccentric antiques dealer and hypnotist (Derek Jacobi) leads Church to a startling discovery: The source of the nightmares may lie in a past-life connection to Margaret Strauss, a world-famous pianist allegedly murdered by her composer husband... in 1948.
In 1949, composer Roman Strauss is executed for the murder of his wife. In 1990s Los Angeles, a detective comes across a mute amnesiac woman who is somehow linked to the Strauss murder.

Reincarnation: more ppl on the planet believe in it than ppl who don'tTo hear Robin Williams say this...was precious! Love it! Great message, although, to really get it right, they needed a crime that happened 200 years or more ago. It's said that it takes 200+ years to re-incarnate. (?) The set design seemed like it was a movie from the 70s. I'm not sure if that was intentional so as to give the audience the impression that this movie was 'caught in a certain time', but the effect it had on me was that this was a much older movie than 1991. Because of this and the 'over dramatic' acting on the part of the cast, I rate this 4 stars. Good rental. Thanks iTunes, for making this the 99 cent movie of the week..Score: 4/5
A new classic! This is a great film--it has classic flavor with a new twist. I love Kenneth Branaugh and Emma Thompson together--what a combination of talent. What???I rented this first of all because it was advertised as 99 cent rental. When I read the cast list I immediately guessed it would be a super movie. So I read the reviews and they confirmed that it was worth watching. Too bad they were all wrong! Great cast! The premise of the plot is interesting. Something just did not click with me. My wife and I found it boring and unable to pique our interest. We watched it to the end but will not watch it again or recommend it..Score: 1/5

DEAD AGAIN: 1949: L.A. composer Roman Strauss (Branagh) gets the chair for murdering his wife Margaret (Thompson). He claims he loved her, though—and that “this is all far from over.” Fast forward to 1991, where low-rent P.I. Mike Church (also played by Branagh) gets stuck baby-sitting amnesiac “Grace” (also played by Thompson), who’s been traumatized into silence by a pair of scissors—the Strauss murder weapon. Enter flaming antiques dealer Franklin (Jacobi), who uses hypnotic regression to help her. Under his spell, she regains her voice and her memory. But it’s a memory of a past incarnation, in which she finds herself reliving the Strauss’ fatal attraction. A nutjob defrocked shrink (Robin Williams, in an uncredited role) explains the “karmic credit plan,” speculating that Mike and Grace might be the Strausses reincarnated—and fated to repeat their experiences. Before long, personal history is indeed repeating itself—but through a mirror, darkly. No one understands the rules of karma, however, so whose life is at risk this time around? Will it be replay, revenge—or are they both pawns in a game far more complicated than they could ever guess? Discussion: Is it incredible coincidence or cosmic conspiracy? Even the question indicates the larger-than-life nature of this stylish thriller. Part Hitchcockian psychological suspenser (with a New Age twist), part film noir mystery with romance, this is a giddy, tongue-in-cheek romp played dead straight, despite its grandiose gestures. Much of its appeal lies in watching a bunch of classical actors happily slumming in a B-movie; beyond that are velvety black and white flashbacks and an ending that overlaps past and present plots to come full circle for karmic (and poetic) justice. If you just accept the born-again premise of overlapping, interlocking lives, you’re in for some unpredictable intrigue and real suspense—as well as some outlandish fun..Score: 4/5
Branagh is no HitchcockQuestion, how do three brilliant, classically trained actors (Thomson, Branagh and Jacobi) combine to make such a terrible movie? Answer: Must be the director! How on earth Roger Ebert can compare this to Rebecca, Wuthering Heights or Vertigo is totally beyond me. The plot is contrived, the acting stilted (despite the all-star cast) and the entire experience is almost embarrassingly awful. The cast was the reason I rented this movie, which makes it an even greater let-down. The one saving grace is that it might help someone you know give up smoking! Well executedThis movie ties all aspects of the past and present together well. Anyone not liking it, is just not smart enough to realize that this is very close to reality. Kenneth Branagh does every Paul Reiser character ever.I remember renting this back in the early ‘90s and being absolutely blown away by the ending. (Okay, it was no Presumed Innocent, but what else was?) Watching it twenty years later, with the mystery already unravelled, you concentrate on very different things: the fact that it takes the better part of an hour to start actually ramping up any suspense, how funny the melodramatic flashbacks are, how young everybody looks, etc. You probably also blink fairly abruptly the first time Branagh opens his mouth and THAT ACCENT tumbles out. I know it’s a relatively small detail, but if Kevin Costner’s on-again-off-again accent in Prince of Thieves is fair game, then the good detective’s Paul-Reiser-before-most-people-saw-him-in-Mad-About-You tone is equally worth cringing over. A minor point, but it’s what sticks out now. Otherwise, you’ve got a decent enough mystery, some convenient plot railroading, and a score that doesn’t introduce the tension quite as early as it probably should have. There’s nothing much wrong with the writing or editing, but it still feels like nothing of consequence is happening for about the first forty minutes… not really something you’d expect to say about a day that involves bringing a mute, amnesiac stranger home because you couldn’t subject her to the hellish freakhole that was your local hospital. It all gets better in the second half, but it’s a bit of an uphill march to get there..Score: 3/5
