The legendary Rosalind Russell ("Gypsy," "His Girl Friday") recreates on screen her Broadway triumph as an eccentric grande dame who teaches her 10-year old nephew to appreciate life. As she puts it..."life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death."
Mame Dennis, a progressive and independent woman of the 1920s, is left to care for her nephew Patrick after his wealthy father dies. Conflict ensues when the executor of the father's estate objects to the aunt's lifestyle and tries to force her to send Patrick to prep school.

Life is a banquet......And most poor suckers are starving! That is my favorite quote of all time and is coined by Auntie Mame in this truly priceless comedy. This movie will forever be on my top ten list. This movie isn't a gut buster. I mean you'll laugh here and there, believe me and you'll smile all the way. But this movie draws you in. You become part of it. What makes this movie so great is that it touches you. You can't help but love Auntie Mame. I wish I had such an Aunt! As you watch this movie be sure to look at the artistry. The sets, the costumes, the camera work. This is a masterpiece! Rosalind Russell rules! I frequently do the Ping Pong routine. Classic! Just......well....top drawer! Damn! Fun and FunnyA must-watch film. The 50's humor transcends time to today very well. There are so many one-liners, you'll need to watch this film twice and write down a few. ''Child - how can you see with all that light?" The only drawback is that the anti-conservative message is ridiculously over-played, as is the Asian stereotype of the help. That part was, well, it was ghastly. It was just ghastly..Score: 5/5
The Best Progressive FilmWhen I was a child I remember loving this film wishing I had a aunt like Auntie Mame. As I got older and rewatched this film it had such taboos that I didn’t pickup on that are still present in today’s society. Like the progressive teacher and unwed mother to name a few.
