WWII Melodrama of the First OrderClint Eastwood must have been still in acting school and Richard Burton appeared still trying to get over his Shakespearean roles … poor acting on one account and over acting on the other account. They shot more bullets and exploded more dynamite than a platoon could carry. Kind’a like the old cowboy movies. Cliches of actors and settings abound (German officer with monocle, curly golden haired SS officer, etc.). Good for some laughs but not a good serious, well done movie. As good as it getsThis is about as good as this genre can get. Richard Burton is a tour de force and exudes male "coolness." Clint Eastwood shows a surprising subtlety one would come to expect from his later movies, but not one this early. The "feel" and sensibilities of the film are second to none and the director earned his pay by delivering a succinct, exciting, edge of your seat WW2 whodunnit.
