Veterans who loved Hurt Locker - find this helpfulWith all due respect to Army EOD, this was one of the best war movies I ever saw. It's all a metaphor for...addiction.I loved this film and thought it was one of the best films released that year. Lots of vets are saying that it doesn't depict what goes on over there and it isn't accurate.
As someone who doesn't serve, I'm sure they're right. The film wasn't intended to be portrayed as real, that was just how it was marketed to attract an audience to see a film taken place in an unpopular war (during an unpopular time to put out a war film about said war).
The lead character is addicted to what he does, will sacrifice his comrades, leave his family behind and do insane things to feel his rush. It makes him feel a certain way and it was depicted beautifully at the films final scene.
This was not meant to be literal, and I think taking it that way will ruin the film for anyone (as will any film for that matter).
*spoiler alert. When Sargent James gives Sandborne water during the sniper scene and didn't take any for himself, it's because the drug (the war) is what he needs to sustain his life. He doesn't need what "normal" people need.
That's how addicts are. They don't care at the moment and will go without food or water and will put others in danger and will not care for their welfare. It's all about the fix. That's his water. That was what the film is ultimately about.
I think this was missed by many people. Watch it through this lens and you'll be surprised how much you'll see that wasn't seen before.
