Jeff Bridges won an Academy Award® for his role as the richly comedic, semi-tragic, romantic anti-hero, Bad Blake, in the debut feature film, Crazy Heart, from writer-director Scott Cooper. Bad Blake is a broken-down, hard-living country music singer who's had way too many marriages, far too many years on the road, and one too many drinks way too many times. And yet, Bad can’t help but reach for salvation with the help of Jean (two-time Golden Globe®-nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal), a journalist who discovers the real man behind the musician. As he struggles down the road of redemption, Bad learns the hard way just how tough life can be on one man’s crazy heart. Crazy Heart won two Academy Awards® for Best Actor and Best Original Song.
When reporter Jean Craddock interviews Bad Blake—an alcoholic, seen-better-days country music legend—they connect, and the hard-living crooner sees a possible saving grace in a life with Jean and her young son.

"Tender Mercies" mixed with "The Wrestler" ...... just like those two films, this feature spins around its story and limited budget in order to release its star into just about a career-best performance. With this little independent film, Jeff Bridges is able to shine in a penetrating performance that goes through a very satisfying character arc. It takes a gradual pace, but the character of Bad Blake, though sometimes hard to decipher, is a person that we are anchored into following. Maggie Gyllenhaal is really pretty excellent as the writer who falls in love with him (that felt a little hard to believe, at first, but the romance grew on me). Colin Farrell and Robert Duvall have some fun cameo/supporting turns, as well (it's always swell to see Duvall pop up in support every now and again). With some songs that are sure to get one humming (performed excellently by Bridges and Farrell) and a focused atmosphere, "Crazy Heart" is a sometimes bleak, sometimes uplifting movie that offers a superb viewing experience..Score: 5/5
Top drawer acting, good music but not much elseJeff Bridges is brilliant, but the character he plays is not very likable. The music is excellent, and Bridges and Farrell's singing really good, even when country is not your particular cup of tea, but the boozing and smoking are almost too much to take... Bad Blake is the original washed up singer and one has to wonder how on earth Maggie Gyllenhaal's character can possible find him attractive! The script is convincing and Robert Duvall's cameo is up to his usual high standards....Score: 4/5

Great music and fresh performances!Bridges and Gyllenhaal had solid and interesting chemistry in this quiet gem of a movie, that never wavered from keeping me totally absorbed. Outstanding Acting and DirectionYou always approach an Oscar-winning movie with a degree of trepidation. Has it been over-hyped? Is the performance really that good? Both answers in this case are resoundingly 'Yes'. Jeff Bridges is knock-out perfect in his role, and Maggie Gyllenhaal, as the patient, loving, but eventually disillusioned victim of his character's addictions, produces an outstanding, sweet, but never saccharine, performance. The film is beautifully set and shot, and the soundtrack will thrill anyone with an ounce of regard for rhythm and live, acoustic music. Full marks to Bridges for his rendition of the key songs.
