Movie Is Better Than the NovelThe novel is a patchwork of lifeless writing, some good imagery, and a lot of overwriting. To me, overwriting means beating a metaphor to death. But, for pop writing, over all it's fairly good. The movie, the director's first good one in a long time, is well managed yet also lets the actors come alive spontaneously. The novel-movierelationship reminds me of THE SHINING--King's writing wasn't good, but Kubrick's movie really came alive. By the way, SHUTTER ISLAND's music score is excellent. The film wisely underplays the Agatha Christie aspects of the novel in favor of nourish horror. The movie's flavor reminds me of Cronenberg's VIDEODROME and SCANNERS.
