"The Rite" is a supernatural thriller that uncovers the Devil's reach to even one of the holiest places on Earth. Inspired by true events, the film follows seminary student Michael Kovak (Colin O'Donoghue), who is sent to study exorcism at the Vatican in spite of his own doubts about the controversial practice and even his own faith. Wearing his deep skepticism like armor, Michael challenges his superiors to look to psychiatry, rather than demons, in treating the possessed. Only when he's sent to apprentice with the unorthodox Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins)--a legendary priest who has performed thousands of exorcisms--does Michael's armor begin to fall. As he is drawn into a troubling case that seems to transcend even Father Lucas's skill, he begins to glimpse a phenomenon science can't explain or control...and an evil so violent and terrifying that it forces him to question everything he believes.
Seminary student Michael Kovak reluctantly attends exorcism school at the Vatican. While he’s in Rome, Michael meets an unorthodox priest who introduces him to the darker side of his faith, uncovering the devil’s reach even to one of the holiest places on Earth.

Conversion via Hollywood? One gets the feeling that this film was made to be taken seriously. Well\, who knows? I find it odd that Hollywood would be an instrument of God''s salvation of souls. A look at Exorcism, NOT the ExorcistMany people may be looking for a "spooky" story. I do not think this is the intent of the film. Scary moments yes, but I think the movie was meant to pose the question about belief or non-belief based on the experiences of actual events of a priest. The critics do not explicitly say what was so bad about the picture except "sound design". This leads me to believe they are relying too heavily on comparisons to the movie "The Exorcist". Some movies are made to pose a question, some make a point, some are pure escapism, etc. For a movie to be successful, it must entertain on some level (exception being documentaries). The Exorcist was meant to entertain. It gave people the chills and still does. I do not think, however, many came out of the movie with questions about belief/non-belief. This movie was meant to pose a question, and the acting, dialogue was entertaining enough to keep my interest. If you are looking for "The Exorcist Copycat" movie, rent the original..Score: 4/5

An Interesting Spin on a Subject Widely UsedFIrst off, do not pay attention to the reviews of the critics. While sometimes they are spot on, more often than not, they are far off the mark and miss the concept entirely, mainly when the film isn't "Hollywood style." The Rite gives a different view into exorcisms and the questions they pose. This movie delves deeper into the subject of whether or not exorcisms are real or if they are simply a futile attempt at cleansing someone who merely believes that they are possessed by demons. This movie is not like The Exorcist: it doesn't have spinning heads or twisting bodies, nor does it have the cheap thrills that are expected of horror movies today. The plot line of "The Rite" is much more clever than I expected and certainly more interesting. I prefer horror movies that make you think, rather than giving a nauseatingly amount of scenes that attempt to "scare you out of your seat." If you are interested in watching something different, though scary in its own way and right, rent or buy this movie. You won't be disappointed..Score: 5/5
...Not so much rotten as intellectually unripe...As others have noted, take the critical evaluations of this movie with a grain of salt. Of the vertibile cornucopia of contemporary "exorcism-as-horror" films, this one stands on its own quite well, despite not being particularly horrific. Anthony Hopkins is as great as ever, while the young Colin O'Donoghue plays the part of an unintentionally cool, somewhat aloof, skeptic with casual, concvincing ease. Where the film goes wrong, however, is in the second half's departure from what seems to be a much more intellectually intriguing trajectory laid out during the first. While the first half seems to be setting up a story line in which the film's protagonist sets out to challenge the institution of exorcism and demonstrate its hopelessly hokey, medievel, and ultimately superstitious nature, the film ends up marching down the same oft-trodden road of pushing the idea that exorcism and demonic possession are real (cue "This film is inspired by true events" prologue). Make no mistake, however: demonic possession isn't real, which means that exorcisms are routinely performed by the Catholic Church on people who are suffering from purely mental ailments (if any ailments, at all), and often with disastrous results. So, while the film is certainly entertaining in the same way that fantasy often is, one wishes that, in the 21st century, a fiction director would have the guts to make an uber-budget movie that takes a realistic look at religious superstitions and shows them for what they really are, even if doing so means upsetting one hundred-million religious movie-goers..Score: 4/5
I think notSuspenseful? Mayben, yes a bit...scary? No. Exaggerated? Yes. And the rite goes in a light way of the exorcist if you must. It was just fineThe movie made much more sense than I was wiling to give it credit for as I was watching, probably because it did not appear to be a huge budget film. If I am going to try to compare it with other supernatural films involving excorsicms, than I would rate this film towards the top of the list. It was actually quite well thought out, believe it or not, and I think that I actually liked it. Now I can hardly remember when I was last impressed by a film, and if they would have even gone further with this one, than it might be one of the great horror films. I remember some scenes from the exorcist movies that were truely difficult to beat or else ideas such as Lucifer falling out of the sky and landing in a certain location in the desert in which a temple was built and buried underneath the sand. Yet this film scrores points where exorcisms is in doubt, and perhaps at conflict with modern principals, and than in the film, there is a final test of faith. Well it is a good plot line. The only area where I wanted more strength was with the protagonist, take Keanu Reeves for example, he has a strong atttitude whereas this actor needs more experience and some more muscles as well, but they did have a solid bases for making this film.
