Český Henri Charriére (1906–1973) byl odsouzen na doživotí a deportován do nechvalně proslulé věznice na Ďábelských ostrovech ve Francouzské Guayaně, kde si odpykávali trest nejhorší zločinci. Tamní podmínky byly nelidské, režim tvrdý a naděje na únik prakticky neexistovala. Charriére, podle tetování přezdívaný Motýlek, však odmítl rezignovat. Myšlenka na útěk byla to jediné, co ho udržovalo při životě. Získal pro ni i dalšího vězně, slabošského, intelektuálně založeného Degu, jenž se do trestnice dostal za padělání peněz. Několik nezdařených pokusů Motýlkovi vyneslo přísnou samotku a kruté zacházení, přesto bojoval dál.
