Český Zdivočelé stádo hnané na Scarův příkaz potměšilými hyenami by bezbranného Simbu určitě zadupalo do země, kdyby jej nezachránil jeho otec Mufasa. Při zoufalé záchraně však zahyne. Protřelému Scarovi pak nedá moc práce přesvědčit vyděšeného Simbu, že je zodpovědný za otcovu smrt a měl by neodkladně uprchnout! Ako bezstarostné mláďa sa už nemôže dočkať, kedy bude konečne kráľom a dni trávi hrami so svojou kamarátkou Nalou. Jeho otec kráľ Mufasa, vážený vládca Levej skaly a okolitého územia, sa mu snaží vštepiť zásady "kruhu života" - čo je jemná rovnováha prírody, spájajúca všetky zvieratá. Snaží sa ho okrem toho pripraviť na deň, keď bude sám povolaný za vodcu. Mufasov brat Scar však dúfa, že ten deň nikdy nepríde a snuje intrigy, pomocou ktorých by odstránil kráľa spolu so Simbom, aby sa tak mohol zmocniť trónu.

Hrvatski Bezbrižno djetinjstvo princa Simbe, sina moćnog kralja Mufase, naglo je prekinuto kada mu ujak Scar ubije oca, a Simbu proglasi odgovornim i protjera ga iz kraljevstva. U progonstvu se lavić sprijatelji s bradavičastom svinjom Pumbom i merkatom Timonom, s kojima provodi dane i od kojih uči. No približava se dan njegove punoljetnosti i Simbu posjeti duh oca, koji mu govori da se mora vratiti u kraljevstvo, poraziti Scara te zauzeti mjesto na tronu. Prihvaćajući "hakuna matata“ filozofiju, zajedno sa svojim komičnim prijateljima, Simba kreće uzeti ono što mu pripada.
