(Subtitled) Eight French Christian monks live in harmony with their Muslim brothers in a monastery perched in the mountains of North Africa in the 1990s. When a crew of foreign workers is massacred by an Islamic fundamentalist group, fear sweeps though the region. The army offers them protection, but the monks refuse. Should they leave? Despite the growing menace in their midst, they slowly realize that they have no choice but to stay… come what may. This film is loosely based on the life of the Cistercian monks of Tibhirine in Algeria, from 1993 until their kidnapping in 1996.
Of Gods and Men (Subtitled) Film Synopsis
French drama based on the 1996 kidnapping and killing of seven monks in Algeria. A group of Trappist monks reside in the monastery of Tibhirine in Algeria, where they live in harmony with the largely muslim population. When a bloody conflict between Algeria's army and Muslim Jihadi insurgents disrupts the peace, they are forced to consider fleeing the monastery and deserting the villagers they have ministered to. In the face of deadly violence the monks wrestle with their faith and their convictions, eventually deciding to stay and help their neighbours keep the army and the insurgents at bay.

Great Film Not for EveryoneThe film will not be for everyone. The film focuses on faith and the struggles that many people feel. How far do you go for something you belive in? The pace for me was about right to reflect on the charcters situation. The film does not take a easy road. The Muslium's of the village are seen as peolpe. IncredibleThis was an amazing film. I was going into it expecting to be bored, but I was very, very wrong. The flow of the movie is absolutely perfect, and the ending is filmed so beautifully. Each of the monks has a distinct personality, and we see their struggles with their faith and with their difficult work. The filmmakers clearly care that the story of these monks is told, and they tell it well.
The actors were superb, especially Michael Lonsdale. His eyes are so expressive, and he made me shed a tear at the end of the movie. Lambert Wilson's performance as the leader of the monks was also hauntingly beautiful as he personifies the struggle between his faith and his human proclivities; between good and evil.

Deutsch Der Film basiert auf einem realen Geschehen. Im Kloster Notre-Dame de l’Atlas in Tibhirine im algerischen Atlas-Gebirge lebten bis 1996 acht Trappisten-Mönche friedlich mit der vorwiegend muslimischen Bevölkerung Algeriens in Einklang, bis sieben der Mönche auf ungeklärte Weise ermordet wurden. Der Film schildert die Ereignisse und atmosphärischen Veränderungen, die diesem Mord vorangingen, und zeigt die Stimmungsschwankungen der Mönche zwischen Todesangst und Gottvertrauen. Als Szenario diente ein verlassenes Kloster in Marokko. Besonders wurde auf die Authentizität der Umgebung geachtet.
