A Tribe Called Quest has been one of the most commercially successful and artistically significant musical groups in recent history. The band’s sudden break-up in 1998 shocked the industry and saddened the scores of fans, whose appetite for the group's innovative musical stylings never seem to diminish. This insightful film, directed by Michael Rapaport, takes viewers on a behind-the-scenes journey - chronicling the group's rise to fame and revealing the stories behind the tensions which erupted in the years to come. The film features interviews with the members of the group as well as with the Beastie Boys, Kanye West, Pharrell, Mos Def, Monie Love, De la Soul, the Jungle Brothers, Common and more.
Having forged a 20-year run as one of the most innovative and influential hip hop bands of all time, the Queens NY collective known as 'A Tribe Called Quest' have kept a generation hungry for more of their groundbreaking music since their much publicized breakup in 1998. Michael Rapaport documents the inner workings and behind the scenes drama that follows the band to this day. He explores what's next for, what many claim, are the pioneers of alternative rap.

Had to own this one. After trying to see the film in an independent venue, I finally caught a viewing at a nearby college. I grew up with Tribe and had heard all the hullabaloo about Q-Tip's response to the film so I went in ready to form my own opinion. I can say with great confidence that the film is AWESOME! The music made me feel nostalgic while the interviews pulled the curtain back on Tribe's public image. By keeping the camera on his subjects for a beat or two after they stopped speaking, Rappaport captured the non-verbal expressions that sometimes said more about the question asked than the response itself. I found the presentation balanced and fair. But I can see why Tip was salty. Seeing yourself without a filter can be scary, especially when it concerns your treatment of those you love. I don't think Tip's displeasure with the film was about his perfectionism; I think it was about him witnessing the raw realities of not just who he is, but also how he's seen by those who know him better then most. And in the end, that's what a good documentary is supposed to do. Get the film and tell a friend to do the same..Score: 5/5

Required viewing for hip hop headsPerhaps the most influential hip hop group of our time, ATQC have a story to tell. Thank god it was a talented fan (Michael Rappaport) who directed and delivered the story in this brilliant documentary . As a die hard product of golden era hip hop, I found this film to be not only immensely entertaining but informative but surprising at the same time. The soundtrack and concert footage will make you long for the days when hip hop was at its finest. The massive list of cameos add layers of depth and insight towards the genre's most beloved collaboration, explaining how they came to be, what happened along the way and where they stand today. Quite frankly, because of how well this is done, I've watched this a number of times already as it represents perhaps the best chapter(s) in the realm of hip hop(e). As this was released a few years prior to the passing of our beloved Phife - The Trini Gladiator & 5 Foot Assassin - it is a bittersweet reminder as to how much he is missed. At the same time, it is also a great way to pay homage to his legacy as it depicts him amidst his highs and his lows. If you're a fan of the genre and are on the fence, this is required viewing. You owe it to yourself, to Phife, to Tip, to Shaheed, and of course, to Jarobi. A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes (always).. Jarobi..Score: 5/5
