Academy Award winner Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall star in director Stanley Kubrick's disturbing adaptation of Stephen King's blockbuster horror novel. When writer Jack Torrance (Nicholson)--who has a history of alcoholism and child abuse--takes a job as winter caretaker for a hotel high in the Rocky Mountains, he, his wife (Duvall) and their psychic young son will be isolated until spring. But once the first blizzard closes the road out, the accumulated power of evil deeds committed at the hotel begins to drive Jack mad. Now there may be no escape for his wife and son in this haunting madness, memory and family violence.

Jack Torrance accepts a caretaker job at the Overlook Hotel, where he, along with his wife Wendy and their son Danny, must live isolated from the rest of the world for the winter. But they aren't prepared for the madness that lurks within.

Here’s Johnny!Thank you, Stephen King for writing this novel, and thank you, Stanley Kubrick for making such a great blockbuster! This is such a great movie, and it is one of my favorite horror movies! However, I wish there was a real soundtrack for the film that could be found digitally. I had to go hunting for some of the songs elsewhere. It is NOT for kids, though. It is only good for people who are 17 or older. But for those who watch it, they will love it!.Irvin2020Score: 4/5

DisappointingAfter reading the book I realized how much this movie left out. The acting could have been so much better. In the book there is so much that happens that didn’t happen in this movie. Amazing filmThis is a classic horror film that’s not about jump scares, but rather the chilling isolation and feeling of being trapped in the Overlook with nowhere to go while changes slowly happen and the supernatural reveals itself … The acting is top notch, Jack Nicholson who happens to be named Jack in the movie gives a mind blowing performance! Best horror movie everThe master of horror story telling (King) meets the film perfectionist (Kubrick) and you get the best horror film ever made. The story works on so many levels and the direction, cinematography works on numerous levels. Watch Room 231 on YouTube to eee all the details you wouldn’t notice unless you liked frame by frame at each shot. AwfulThis was a classic i have never seen and was constantly being recommended. I have to say i was very disappointed. Left with many unanswered questions and some very strange and questionable scenes. Found it to be more of a meme of a movie. Also zero payoff with the ending. “The Shining”“The Shinning” is an extremely complex picture; to call it a horror film would be a disservice. It at once defined the genre and rendered many future entries irrelevant. “The Shinning” is one of the best films that I have ever seen, surpassing Kubrick’s own “2001: A Space Odyssey”. The craftsmanship is nearly unprecedented, paralleled only by a few films. Consider, for instance, where Kubrick cuts from Wendy (Shelly Duval) making a circular motion with her hand, to a shot of Danny (Danny Lloyd) tricycling through a hallway, with a piece of hanging plastic, in the background, moving in the same manner as Wendy’s hand. Or Jack, resting in the maze, as a mirror image of Colville’s “Moon and Cow”. (Neither of these are original observations, but they are illustrative of the filmmakers’ deep and nuanced understanding of their medium.) Kubrick is much like Hitchcock is his ability to manipulate an audience: symbolic, metaphysical, and psychological horror are all mixed with physical horror (i.e. the reality of the ax, death by exposure, etc.). He knows how to make us jump in our chairs and simultaneously consider the reality of what we are seeing. Even for non-horror fans, I would highly recommend “The Shining”. 5 Stars—“The Shinning” is a work of art and begs multiple viewings..CandureactorScore: 5/5
