Richard Dreyfuss stars as cable worker Roy Neary, who along with several other stunned bystanders experience a close encounter of the first kind - witnessing UFOs soaring across the sky. After this life-changing event, the inexplicable vision of a strange, mountain-like formation haunts him. He becomes obsessed with discovering what it represents, much to the dismay of his wife and family. Meanwhile, bizarre occurrences are happening around the world. Government agents have close encounters of the second kind - discovering physical evidence of extraterrestrial visitors in the form of a lost fighter aircraft from World War II and a stranded military ship that disappeared decades earlier only to suddenly reappear in unusual places. Roy continues to chase his vision to a remote area where he and the agents follow the clues that have drawn them to reach a site where they will have a close encounter of the third kind - contact.

MEH!I did not see this movie when it was in theaters back in the 1970s. But I remember everyone talking about it. It may be that this movie is not standing the test of time. I am not sure. But I can say that it’s not a great a film. It’s okay. I really cannot recommend it. It’s not filled with great ideas, nor does it help us think more clearly about what not being alone in the universe means. It’s just a fantasy piece that involves UFOs.
Some of the motifs in the movie remind me of other Spielberg movies like Poltergeist. Like Mel Brooks he seems to recycle ideas and re-presents them in slightly different ways. Again, not very interesting..ThePolarBeastScore: 3/5

TriumphantTriumphant. Classic. Iconic. Groundbreaking. Heart-wrenching. Human. Alien. These are all words that can be used to describe Steven Spielberg's third theatrical film. It is absolutely beautiful, haunting, inspiring, and will leave you thinking about the ones you love and your place in the world for years after you first see it's end credits, and I doubt you will watch it only once. Encounter Again and Again...Steven Spielberg's opus answering the question are we alone in the universe, still stands as one of the most remarkable epics in film history. Though it premiere in 1977 "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" tapped into the cultural consciousness and fascination with UFOs. The story goes further than that and evolves through the experience of one man. Richard Dreyfuss' "Roy Neary" is an everyman until one day all that changes when he sees something incredible. Roy's life gets turned upside down when he realizes that he is not alone.
Pretty soon he is overwhelmed and obsessed with his "close encounter" and follows his own instincts – his world opening up to the impossible that aliens exist. Masterful and intricate, and still very human even when it strives for its intergalactic premise, "Close Encounters" is still a wonder to behold. Sci-Fi Horror masterpieceI consider this a masterful horror film in that First Contact leads to madness, family dissolution and insane escape.
