Great and heartbreakingLike every great tragedy the Big Star story breaks your heart every time you relive it, while you root against inevitability for a happier ending for Alex, Chris, Andy and Jody. Watching the SunriseWoke up before dawn with "Watch the Sunrise" in my head after watching this doc show & tell of the sunny & cloudy journey of this great band. I first heard of Big Star via The Replacements in the 80's - love the interview timepiece from Paul Westerberg, as well as the footage from the band and the artists who were inspired by them. Like many fans, I didn't buy their music till the 90's, but the filmmakers do a wonderful job of connecting the mid 60's rock to the alternative world. The imaginative songwriting & vulnerability under the shiny guitars is shown with excellent storytelling, including eccentrics like Jim DIckinson, and the emotional footage & interviews of the band members' later years. There's something universal in their stories even if you aren't a fan of their music - a doc full of hope, disappointment, and well... humanity..Score: 5/5
KillerEven as a long-time fan of Big Star, I was still surprised and schooled a few times. The melancholic story made me wish I'd never heard of them before so I could have run home and sat with the entire discography for the first time. FantasticWorth the price of admission for the music alone. The story is heartbreaking and well-told, the movie is uplifting at times, devastating at times, but the music is the star here.
