Thought ProvokingGreat movie and the writers of this book/movie must have thoroughly researched what went down during that era. Steve McQueen did an excellent job taking this book and turning it into a movie in which everyone can compassionately understand. My only thought in which I felt was not appropriate was Nyong’o academy award, I did not feel she deserved an award for portraying the unrelenting suffering she went through. She did a great job, but did not truly act in a way that deserved and award.Score: 4/5

Feel it in your SOUL!This is a masterpiece. There are few negative things I can say about this film. The story is phenomenal, made even more horrifying by its realism. The acting is absolutely superb across the entire cast. Michael Fassbender is truly terrifying in his role. Slight changes in facial expression reveal an upwelling of emotion rarely seen in a motion picture. The photography is brilliant and entirely on location. Editing is so tight and smooth that the narrative never becomes tired. You're glued to you seat throughout. Sound and dialect are so good you'll swear you're actually immersed in the historic and geographic contexts. This is a difficult film to watch. It is painfully brutal and frank at times. It will make you squirm and wince, but ultimately it reveals the victory of hope over despair, though it's far from a "happy ending." Easily the best film of the year, and probably the decade..Score: 5/5
OverratedThis movie was a very good film; however it was not great. The reviews of this film are so inflated and I honestly believe it's because of the movie's topic and not it's substance. Good storyline and some good acting but way too overrated in my opinion. Good film to see once..Score: 3/5
AwfulThis movie is AWFUL. I must conclude that NO ONE who participated in making this movie, actually read the book. There are so many inaccuracies, dare not even START! I will say, although her story line is largely inaccurately documented, Lupita Nyong'o did an excellent job of protraying Patsy as she was presented in the script. That is IT. Solomon Northup "character" did not mimick Solomon Northup the man, as he HIMSELF depicts in the books. I honestly do nt understand why hollywood refuses to follow the truth of a man's story. THEY HAVE A CHEATSHEET. HE SPELLS IT OUT FOR THEM WORD FOR WORD. Why was it too difficult for the man to have 2 daughters? Why did they say he only had one (A LIE). Why did they act as if he shared his true identity more than twice while enslaved? Why were the slave owners not depicted as they are in the book OR the mistresses? I mean seriously. And why did they not give the credit to Henry B. Northup, Esq the REAL man who traveled to LA and helped him regain his freedom. I mean seriously, why change the FACTS of history? WhY? I have no idea why this movie was nominated as best picture. The acting by large was marginal and I mean marginal by large. A truly disappointing movie in my opinion. Such a shame that most watched it and have no idea the true realties of the story because they haven't read the book. Why does hollywood do this crap?!!!.Score: 1/5

12 Years a SlaveA worthy and compelling story but Steve McQueen and his editor lost something in the clunky telling of it. Big disappointment. Highly surprising it won best pic. That said, the acting was fantastic. All terrific performances. Frankly I can't believe Michael Fassbender did not win for BSA. An unflattering and brutal role that must have taken a toll. Paul Giamatti cameo also a standout. Paul Dano typically chilling. Considering the age, make-up shd have dulled Brad's pearly whites down some. Rentable, but this story deserves to be remade. Difficult to watchWe were thrilled by the excellent cast, including superstars such as Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch and Paul Giamatti as well as the rising stars Ghiwetel Ejiofor and Lupita Nyong'o. They did a superb job bringing this heart-wrenching story to life. While it was absolutely vital to showcase the history of cruelty and shame of being a slave in the south, it was at times unbearable to view. There were moments when it seemed to drag on forever for no logical reason. For the most point, the directing was a bit odd to the point of being overacted and overdone..Score: 3/5

Stunning performances by Chiwetel Ejiofer, Lupita Nyong'o, and Michael Fassbender (slave owner Edwin Epps). One of the most important Hollywood docudramas of the last few decades. Watch for a career defining supporting role by producer Brad Pitt, cast in the role of a noble Canadian. Emotionally gripping: While seated in the jam-packed screening (predominantly filled with many spry & knowledgeable seniors), one elderly woman seated on my right, was quietly weeping. A bit disheartening though, were the absence of any young moviegoers at the March 4, 2014 screening; I doubt that even one patron under age 30 showed up. However, an appreciative crowd, many even remained seated for the closing credits..Score: 5/5
