Jason Robards, Martin Balsam and E.G. Marshall star in this definitive, authentic reenactment of the “date which will live in infamy,” and the political intrigue that preceded it. The code words TORA! TORA! TORA! meant that the Japanese Imperial Navy’s attack on Pearl Harbor and other targets on December 7, 1941 had begun. With over 3,000 killed or wounded, America was abruptly drawn into WWII.
In the summer of 1941, the United States and Japan seem on the brink of war after constant embargos and failed diplomacy come to no end. "Tora! Tora! Tora!", named after the code words use by the lead Japanese pilot to indicate they had surprised the Americans, covers the days leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor, which plunged America into the Second World War.

Not the original filmWhy they wouldn’t keep it the original version I have no idea, the greatest things about the DVD and seeing it as a child with my father was actuality able to understand what was going on thanks to all the subtitles that list the different officers, position and rank..Score: 3/5
An important filmVery close to the actual history and with a fair presentation of the history from both sides. The performances are also excellent. The dedication to accuracy is refreshing, particularly when compared to such films as the Battle of the Bulge and Oliver Stone's JFK. This film actually lost money in the theaters but was very well received. As for the iTunes Extras, the history vs hollywood featurette is narrated by an obviously drunk Burt Reynolds, plus the video for the featurette was encoded by an amateur with the line order reversed (tiny horizontal lines seen in any fast moving elements). Regardless, this film should be required viewing in schools..Score: 5/5
One of my all-time favorite movies, but......my only complaint is that this version is not the same as the original. At the beginning of the film, as each character is introduced, their name and title is supposed to be super-imposed on the screen to let viewers know who is who. Also, at various points of the movie, the place and/or date and time are supposed to be shown. Finally, at the very end of the movie, as Yamamoto is gazing out at the ocean, his comment about the "sleeping giant" is supposed to be shown again. Not sure why these things are missing, but I'm kinda sorry I bought this version for nostalgic reasons.Doesn't take away from the quality of the movie and such, but for me it was disappointing that those elements were not present, and I'm a bit disappointed at iTunes/Apple for not having the actual ORIGINAL movie available..Score: 5/5

OK, not the same as original.I have this on DVD, and I've seen it on TV many times. The version on iTunes is different than the version you'll see on TV or DVD. On the original version, all of the Japanese officers are identified with sub-titles so you know who they are. On the iTunes version, all of these identification sub-titles are removed, so you have no idea who's who. So unless you've seen it on TV, it's hard to figure out who the officers are. Somebody decided to "improve" the original and removed all of the identification sub-titles. Throughout the movie, english sub-titles are there so you can understand what the Japanese are saying, you just don't know who's saying it. Other than that, it's the same as the original. Disappointing though that the sub-titles are removed identifying the Japanese officers, as well as the US officials. The movie itself I give 5 stars, this version, 3. Get it on DVD if you can, it's better. (I bought on iTunes, so I can watch while on the go, and not have to lug DVDs around.).Score: 3/5
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT HISTORICAL DRAMAAn exceptionally rare combination of historical accuracy, meticulous writing, spot-on casting, tight directing, surgical editing, stunning photography, beautifully composed score. and simply outstanding entertainment. There can be only one Tora! Tora! Tora! After first watching this film when it originally came out, it still has wow factor. ‘A realistic wartime drama portraying the bombing of Pearl Harbor from both the U.S. and Japanese perspectives’, it still entertains the modern audience by bringing historical facts into life. Well worth a viewing despite its over 3 hours length. It lacks the labeling of characters which takes away the understanding of events. However the storyline is brilliant and the actors despite well known for its time simply pay homage to the plot which is unusual. A Hollywood-Sino collaboration which is also a treat. Please help Vincent CanbyThis is a very entertaining movie about an important and tragic day in our history.
