In a world plagued by demons who cause great human suffering, young demon hunter Xuan Zang risks his all to conquer a water demon, a pig demon and the demon of all demons, Sun Wukong. Adhering to his firm belief in giving of one’s self for the greater cause, he embraces the demons as his disciples. However, in order to atone for their own sins and save the common people, the four of them must embark on a journey to the West that’s full of challenges.

Fun and DeepThis movie was an amusing surprise! It reminded me of a wonderfully executed fairy tale, or magical realism with some bloody scenes thrown into the mix. He threaded various stories of demons and parables well, when you look beyond the surface the messeges were quite deep.Score: 5/5
Updated Classic Chinese Novel1st part of a 16th Century classic Chinese folk tale about a Buddhist monk and his trials he suffers to gain enlightenment. It has lots of wonderfully strange characters and really good special effects. The plot goes from horror, to slapstick comedy, to Kung Fu, to romcom, to spiritual awakenings in a entertaining way. The subtitles are good as is the soundtrack. This is the first part of the story, the origin of all the main characters, and ends at the beginning of the their journey to the west..Score: 5/5
It Fell On Its Face!Special effects and timing are perfect, but the style of comedy or silliness were deal-breakers for me. I tried to watch it because I was hoping it would get better. However, after about 25 minutes, I became totally bored & disappointed--so, I turned it off. Stephen Chow's "Kung Fu Hustle" was a much better movie. Recommendations: Tai Chi Zero, Tai Chi Hero, and, Detective Dee are much better movies to watch..Score: 2/5

Not Chow's BestI liked Shaolin, Kung Fu and CJ7 very, very much. This is the first movie Chow has directed I thought was just okay. The problem isn't him so much as the material. I've seen and read other version of the Monkey King tales, and they all suffered from the same plotless, rambling effects of stringing together a bunch of folk tales. Despite the dazzling visuals -- and they are -- this movie had little narrative drive and felt pretty inert in stretches. I felt like I was watching a Chow homage to Terry Gilliam -- brilliant visuals, but not nearly enough character or story to keep anything but my eyeballs engaged..Score: 3/5
Started out Awesome!The first part of this movie was incredible. Then as soon as it switched gears to a “love” story that was boring, contrived, and very prolonged… it took a sharp dive downward. The demons were so impressive and unique but the movie strayed from that to some sort of oppressive preachy spirituality that it no longer could be enjoyed. I went from smiling and laughing to apathetic and regretful..Score: 2/5
