Brendan Gleeson delivers “a truly sensational performance” (Total Film) in this “wickedly funny black comedy” (Time Out) from acclaimed writer-director John Michael McDonagh (The Guard). When a good priest (Gleeson) is threatened by a mysterious member of his parish, he feels sinister forces closing in and begins to wonder if he will have the courage to face his own personal Calvary.
After being threatened during a confession, a good-natured priest must battle the dark forces closing in around him.

Very engaging, very depressingTop marks to the actors here - especially Gleeson. The dialogue is quick, engaging and thought-provoking. But the ending of the movie is what may keep this from being something you would watch again. I found the ending very disappointing and not what I would have liked, nor what I think would have served the story best - gritty realism aside. I was left with a feeling of having seen a slightly unfinished and sad story - which is a feeling I prefer not to have after watching a movie..Score: 4/5
Not a comedy - Moving PieceBrendan Gleeson is amazing! He is one of my favorite actors. This is a thought provoking movie that will make one of two strong impressions on the viewer. Being a Christian this brings to the face the reality of how faith and the subject of God has become, at times, a violent battle between the believer and the non-believer. It is just refreshing to have a movie that shows the harsh reality of what a believer is confronted with at times from a hurt world that doesn’t understand why things happen and how can a person still believe in the existence of God with so much hurt in the world. I love that it shows that people who represent God are very much human that struggle and hurt and can make mistakes but still strive to be more than just human. This is not a faith based feel good movie but very real-life. I am glad I purchased it..Score: 5/5
Deeply MovingHauntingly beautiful masterwork. It towers above this year's Oscar nominated movies. The performances, by all hands, are transcendent. No one has given a better performance ,in any film this year, to match that of Gleeson. Just brilliant!.Score: 5/5
Left Me SilentAfter we were all done watching this at a prescreening, the entire theatre just sat in silence absorbing what we all just witnessed and listening to the music. Overall, it’s an artistic and beautiful film. A few things that specifically stood out to me in this movie were... 1) The score is amazingly well put together. It’s beautiful, emotional, and haunting all at once. 2) Sometimes it felt like the drama was misplaced or overly contrived. 3) Gleeson’s acting is superb, and I felt he brought a depth to his character that would not have been there otherwise..Score: 4/5
Impeccable performance.I can't describe how much wonder is piled in to this movie. It transcends genres, and emotion. It's ends with a *bang*....Score: 5/5
If this town existed ...... We might want to have walls built around it. Everyone in town essentially seems evil, with their main hobby being to torment the priest (Gleeson's performance is wonderful, actually) with their own vileness, taunt him with stories of how his God is cruel to children, call his daughter a prostitute, threaten him, fling cigarettes at him, mock his faith with their sexual and violent predilection. I wanted to like the movie but it just made me think about math. Nobody draws a parish like this. Nobody. And I've left out the most egregious of the assaults against him..Score: 2/5

Fantastic FilmToo frequently we find ourselves walking out of the theater with the vague sense that something happened over the past two hours that required little thought and a lot of supplemental sugar. This film was the first in a long time to evoke a truly moving emotional response. Definitely worth watching if you want to be reminded what it means to be a human..Score: 5/5
NOT a “black comedy” or any other kindOn my iTunes, Apple TV screen, I read “Black Comedy.” I swear I did. The TIME OUT reviewer said that. It’s possible that in the warped, louche sensibility of the TIME OUT reviewer this film seemed that way, but for this simple west coast lad, it wasn’t a black comedy. Yes, a scene with a mincing hustler was amusing. Maybe that was what confused the TIME OUT reviewer. And maybe that was the only scene he saw. On Twitter for the balance of the film perhaps? Someone else called it dark and witty. Dark, yes. Witty, no. Brendan Gleeson worth it. Five stars for Gleeson..Score: 4/5
