Incredible Painter: Horrible WorldIt's true that "Mr. Turner" is a hard movie to watch. There is much struggle and strife in this world. Class distinctions not only separated people by birth or occupation they were rigid and set. Once born into a class it was all but impossible to move up in the world except through marriage or connections. Most of England was a starving mass of misery. All money went to fighting wars and the aristocracy - which owned 80% of the land in England. There were no governmental social security remedies. Churches or family had to step up and many did not. Medicine wasn't even in its infancy: that was typhoid fever all those people turning red died of. No antibiotics or thoughts of catching a disease - illness was considered a punishment for past deeds or the will of god. Syphilis was rife and deeply feared. Pneumonia and lung disease were prevalent from coal and wood fires - the heating method of the day. Childbirth was fearful, often a death sentence of its own. Turner was lucky to born into the lower gentry - obviously his Father was a gentleman of some substance, he'd have inherited the house and the money - been expected to never work lest his "class peers" abandon him. Turner, who would be shunned if he ever took a job (selling paintings was art, not work) was born with a talent and that part of the story is shown beautifully in the shops, museums, dealings and competition with fellow artists. Never could it be mentioned one needed money. Turner was a driven man absolutely owned by his gift - he had to create - and create he did. His work is still considered unmatched by experts, his techniques studied for generations - yet there's never been another Turner. He created his own paints, as one mostly had to do then, and what that entails was fascinating. People write that Turner was eccentric, I disagree, he always knew exactly what he was doing - no whim about it - and there were painters everywhere, several of whom searched for new horizons of paints, techniques and subjects. He was bluff, seemingly rude - but I've seen many people in modern day the same way - those that have their genius running 24/7 in their heads and release only about 15% of their attention from their muse (lest she abandon one) to the putrid real world. People in our age want to see only the glory (or sometimes the horror) of other ages. But they don't want to look at the day-to-day truth. I say beauty coming from somewhere dark, dreary, and disgusting is a gift that shines through the dirt, detritus, disease and demands one "Take a Deeper Look." Turner created an enduring message of the eternal beauty available at any time, and any place, if we'll just take the moment to see..Score: 5/5
Great biopicThis is one of my favorite biopics from 2014. Just because it doesn't have a narrative doesn't mean it's bad. The lack of narrative helps it avoid the usual British biopic cliches. It's an interesting look at at very eccentric man filled with great acting and cinematography. I can see why some people wouldn't like it though.Score: 5/5
Miscast - uninterestingI really wanted to like this movie. I generally love foreign, indie and international films. I also like films about art and artists. But for some reason I couldn’t get into this film. I watched for 30 minutes and then turned it off. It’s a movie, not a book. It should get your attention within the first 30 minutes. I found the English accents very thick and difficult to understand. Also, the haughty English “stiff upper lip” Victorian theme was a real turnoff. I believe that Mr. Turner was miscast. He doesn’t look like any of the historical self portraits Mr. Turner made of himself. To me this movie came across as a bunch of old codgers who were artists. I wish they had been able to create a more interesting script with Mr. Turner as a young man making his way as a painter not as an old crusty codger. I don’t think J.M.W. Turner would have liked the way he was represented in this film..Score: 2/5
A greta insight into the Turner’s worldThis was a great biopic in that it tries to recreate no just what happened but why. Ventures into the psychology of dead people are often fraught with problems, but this movie navigates those challenges very well and sticks to embellishments that are credibly supported by the facts of Turner’s recluse life..Score: 5/5

Could I have my 2.5 hrs back?A painfully slow film about what appears to have been a painful life. Not my cup of teaI didn’t like it. There is no story. The movie just showed us a somewhat depressing elderly Mr. Turner. Is that really who he was - nothing more? Cinematic HodgepodgeI certainly concur with the above statement about the film being wonderfuly shot, well acted, yet lacks a real theme and continuity of thought. I wished to discover more about Turner's astonishing and atmoshperic paintings, his style, his mentors, his struggles as a younger artist, and his deeper philosophical views. Instead, we are subjected to later life relationship filler, which by the way, is not in the least inspiring or interesting.
