True Detective: a shocking new case is seen from the perspective of a superb new cast in Season 2 of this acclaimed series. Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch head up the cast in the story of a bizarre murder case that brings together three law-enforcement officers and a career criminal. Set in the all-industrial city of Vinci in L.A. County, California, the show follows a compromised detective (Farrell), a criminal and entrepreneur (Vaughn) with troubles of his own, a Ventura County Sheriff's detective (McAdams) at odds with the system, and war vet and motorcycle cop (Kitsch) who discovers a disturbing crime scene that triggers an investigation involving three law-enforcement groups, multiple criminal collusions, and billions of dollars.

DisappointedAfter loving Season 1 of True Detective, this Season 2 attempt was just that -- an attempt, and not a very successful one. First of all, I love Vince Vaughn, but he was WAY miscast for this kind of drama. He's good in bromance comedies, but that's the extent of his range. I cringed every time he tried to make a tough-guy move or a passionate speech in this show -- it just looked and felt silly. And why was he affecting a lame East Coast accent when he was clearly in L.A.? Just because he thought of himself as a "wise guy"? And when Colin Ferrel tries to show anguish or any strong emotion, it just seems like he's trying too hard. I made it through to the end of the season, but just barely..Score: 3/5
Season 2 welcomes judgement.I’m a HUGE fan of the first season of true detective, watching it over and over an obscene amount of times. It is, hands down, my favorite TV season of all time. I was pumped for season 2, and to be honest, right off the bat it starts out slow. You are not going to get the same crime drama with 2 strong leads bantering back and forth with epic dialogue.. The story is a little more convoluted than season 1, but I’m going to advise you to stick in until the end. Unlike season 1 which peaked in episode 4, this gets stronger and stronger as the season goes on. If you are not into scripts with “big words” or if you are a fleeting television watcher, you will not like this. You have to pay attention or you will get lost. As a matter of fact, you will have to watch each episode a few times to grasp the tie-ins to the plot line. Nic Pizzolatto makes sure to stick a lot of plot material in every episode, even if you don’t know it’s happening. I also loved the LA Noire theme to the whole season, very cool. Don’t expect Rust Cohle and Marty Hart, but definitely give it a shot..Score: 4/5

It delivers…big time!I’m aware of the criticism leveled at TD S2, but I beg to differ. One reason is my wife and I did exactly what we did with Season 1, but only right away: We watched each episode a 2nd time the night after it aired (we watched all of them first at air time). What we saw was a completely different show that operates on a deeper level than one viewing can convey. The character arcs, the clues, the dynamics of relationships, all of it comes into bas relief on the 2nd viewing, and the result is an utterly satisfying show that I believe will have an even longer life than the first. Season 1 was truly brilliant, but most of its appeal was in the darkly atmospheric world that writer Pizzolatto and director Fukunaga brought to us. Season 2 is brilliant, as well (nor is as misogynistic as S1, quite the contrary) and is a deeper, more satisfying exploration of humankind’s darker obsessions and frailties than S1 ever came close to. Th only reason I give it 4 instead of 5 stars is because I felt the choice of several directors left the execution a little uneven. I’d recommend it to anyone who lives great character-driven crime drama, but only if you’re going to watch it like you would read a great book..Score: 5/5
Pretty good...but...Not nearly as good as season 1, but still fairly riveting and engaging. Vince Vaughn nearly steals the whole show with fierce intensity, he's a bad guy you end up kind of liking. But, that seems to be the trend these days, bad guys are the "good" guys while the good guys are now the "bad" ones. Oh, the cops are likable in this season too, but they are either seriously flawed, corrupted, or have major issues of some kind or another. This season is more politically charged and involves many characters, some which were perhaps not developed enough, yet were central to the overall story. There must have been a lack of law enforcement technical advisory in the big shoutout scene...that or the cops were intentionally portrayed as idiots. Still, there are a lot of good things going on in this season. If you enjoyed season 1, you should like this one too..Score: 3/5

Missing the MysticalBeing an anthology, True Detective seasons have little to no perceivable connection which is enticing due to the unlikely chance of being repetitive. Being courageous to wipe the table clean of characters, plot & location; it is also dangerous as you risk alienating those who enjoyed the format of what came before. All that written, season two is still under the TRUE DETECTIVE title, and with that comes a certain expectation of what made season one, hands down, truly amazing story telling. Perhaps, there needs to be an overarching aspect from season to season without bringing the extra baggage of characters, plot & locale. The “Mystical” could be that aspect: where the first season dances the line so well with Cohle as our guide delving deeper into uncertainty & darkness, season two does not know where or what it wants to be & something gets lost in the incessantly & needlessly convoluted shuffling. Is the second season completely different: almost (& kudos to Pizzolatto for the courage). Is it terrible: no (it is still HBO). Is it amazing: no (though some of the performances from all four leads are). Instead, this season finds itself somewhere in the middle, at times reaching high, whilst at others others skulking low.
