The best show people do not know about.The writing, directing, and production are all very well done on this show. It would be one of the most popular shows out right now if it were on Netflix in the U.S. Hopefully Starz will figure something out so the show can make the 6 seasons that they originally wanted. Me tooI agree excellent entertainment from first season and on through 3. No reason to not expect greatness in further season 4. The storyline and character arcs are well thought out, intelligent and evenly distributed, production values are superior. Awesome job - fantastic showI never write reviews, but I just finished Season 3 and I just wanted to tell everyone involved in the making of this show that they did an awesome job. The production values for this are insane - it really feels like a blockbuster movie - incredible scenery and action scenes. You really feel like you are there. Silver's character is so cool. I like how much he has evolved since the first season. At the end of Season 3 I was getting chills as Max read the note Billy wrote for him. I just mentioned Silver because I don't want to write a novel - but all of the actors/actresses do a great job with their characters. And all the characters are very well written too. If you like history, pirates, action, and just really fun entertainment then you will love this show. I can't wait for Season 4. We need more shows like this!.Score: 5/5

Awesome show, characters and historical tie-ins!Season 2 of Black Sails was a true Masterpiece! This is one of the most unique and captivating shows I have ever watched. This show does two really great things when it comes to its characters; (1) it tells the backstory of James Flint who started out as a Navy Captain before being ostracized by British society. Seemingly 'having no other choice' he applied his skills to captain a privateer ship. The history of this is accurate in that the British did send Navy Captains to lead privateer crews, who made raids on Spanish fleet vessels carrying valuable cargo and profits were shared with the British empire. Endorsing privateer ships at the time was less costly than waging a full on war with Spain. Later, the British government disowned and outlawed privateering (or piracy), giving these men virtually no path to restitution. The backstory gives a rich context for Flint's motivation as a character who is practically waging war single-handedly against the British empire and its 'civilized society' over the injustice laid upon himself and his female companion Miranda Hamilton; and while this pits him so well as the hero fighting for an honourable cause, we are also show another side of Flint that complicates this portrayal; a frightening, unpredictable tyrant, capable of grotesque violence that seemingly has no limits. The second thing to watch for (2) is the attention given to the female characters, especially Guthrie who continuously strives for a position of power despite the threats and odds against her (she seems far ahead of her time), the terrifically sensual Madame Max who manages to be at the centre of every scheme, not to mention the twisted pirate Anne Bonny (another real figure in history although her story is mostly fictionalized in the show). Both Guthrie and Max are forces of sheer ambition which is so interesting to watch in female characters depicted of this time period. Of course when you're dealing with pirates, you should expect deception, plot twists and surprises at every turn and that makes for an exciting story that is full of action and fun to watch. It's not perfect, but Starz network has clearly dedicated considerable budget to this epic series, to the acting, the special effects (be ready for violence), and the writing and have pulled off something that surely should not be passed over. Finally, and in response to some of the reviews I've read to date, you have to know and accept that you're signing up to watch a tv adventure/drama about Pirates, so OF COURSE the characters are somewhat 'stock'. However, the show's plot line intertwines fictional pirate characters seamlessly with actual legendary pirates from history Like Charles Vain (a real and awesome badass who you will love to watch). But this is more of a story about about human ambition and survival during a time when society dictated strict conventions as to what was permissible in the eyes of God and country (universal truths explored in many genres), than it is about men with a parrot on their shoulder, screaming "Arrrr matey!", you're not going to see that here. Oh, and one more note for the ladies, the men in this show are HOT! Enjoy!.Score: 5/5
