Bechdel failWould have liked it better but for the lack of women. I enjoy the period, sets, etc., but ya know what? There were actually women in turn of the century New York (I have it on good authority), and I'm pretty sure more than one of them spoke. There was one scene where two strong women discussed the case for a few minutes, but they had left New York, so maybe in this fictional world someone did turn all the women in turn of the century New York into passing shadows...but anyway, that was it---for the whooooooooole season. Come on..Score: 3/5

OveractingEvery scene Daniel Brühl is in is a bad scene. I tried to watch this because some of my family watch and I wanted to have something to chat with them about, but wow this is spectacularly bad. Even trying to connect with my family could I not make it through watching every episode..Score: 1/5

Really ExcellentI have had a tough time understanding the cool change within entertainment wherein certain short run television series can be as powerful as one long great motion picture. The nexus of this series being basically ‘Jack the Ripper’ in New York; is enough to check out the time frame and vibe of this show. Even though the acting can be a little stiff; Bruhl is amazing as the doctor or ‘Alienist’. The attention to detail is similar to ‘Taboo’ with Tom Hardy. In other words; very exacting and macabre. I actually am waiting for each new episode with interest rarely this strong for this motif. Definitely not a family show due to the nature of the story. But if you are a fan of ‘From Hell’ then enjoy this strange view of pseudo history..Score: 5/5

Meh...never picks up4 episodes in and you just never get to the point of caring about any of the characters. For such talented actors the acting is atrocious...you can't shake the feeling you are watching community theatr, amateurish overly exaggerated pauses and oddly paced delivery of lines. The sets however are wonderfully done..Score: 2/5

Over The Top Time WasterI’ll give this series an extra star for set production. Otherwise, after 4 episodes in, it just doesn’t keep your attention. There is not ONE likable character. This show was overly advertised for months before it debuted (clearly somebody had faith in it). When I went to LA on the release week it was on every bus/billboard/park bench... so I started it. It’s downfall is the acting. SO OVER dramatic. It’s like watching a bad local theatre production. The leads are so ridiculously over dramatic. My partner and I even mock it around the house while having regular conversations that we “Alienist-ate”. A genuine fail. Ridiculously over-acted and not a single character that intrigues (except the mute servant woman)..Score: 2/5

Looking forward to this seriesBased on the book of the same name witten by Caleb Carr. TNT looks like they did a good job at the casting and hope the production shows the grittyness the book describes that old NYC had back in 1896..Score: 5/5

Satisfying in every way-perfect for the 19th century voyeur!“The Alienist” with it’s dark, dangerous atmosphere, excellent acting, and equally fascinating characters full of depth and substance, makes for an excellent opportunity to be the voyeur. Looking in from the outside at the many different layers of 19th century society you may empathize with the immigrants, or perhaps align with the industry barons, the “old money” families represented by the “300”. Then, there’s the corrupt police department with the honest commissioner, Theodore Roosevelt, working with Dr. Lazlo Kreitzler, the Alienist, (who is just beginning to receive some serious recognition for his science), to solve a grisly series of child prostitute murders and mutilations. This show is not for the weak of heart, nor should it be casually watched by young children, in whom it most certainly will cause sleepless nights. But if you, like I, enjoy a well acted, well written murder mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat for the entire time it’s on, only to be disappointed when the credits roll that you have to wait another week to see what happens next, then, this is the SHOW FOR YOU!!!.Score: 5/5
