Sadly dissappointedI was really looking forward to the new season of Doctor Who. I've watched Jodie Whittaker in other performances and thought she was very good and couldnât wait to see what she brought to The Doctor. I even like the idea of having more than one companion. What's surprised me was how bad the writing for this series was. Most of the episodes started out with a very good premise but seem to fall flat halfway through or towards the end. For the next series I hope they keep the cast and fire the writers. I also don't mind the political commentary but keep it subtle and not a slap in the face..Score: 2/5
Thirteen = Brilliant!! Writing = Ehh.After years of people telling me I needed to try out Doctor Who, I finally decided to give it a go. Why? Because of this new series. I was intrigued to see if a show 50+ years running could successfully genderbend its main character while still keeping true to the heart of the character and the show itself. The Doctor has become an icon for geeks everywhere, and as a huge Star Wars, Tolkien, and general sci-fi/fantasy nerd, I have to appreciate that. Series 11 seemed like a great jumping-on join for a noob to get her start in the Whoniverse. I was absolutely right. I fell in love with Jodie Whittakerâs version of the Doctor almost immediately - her quirky mannerisms (and especially facial expressions) remind me somewhat of Martin Freemanâs Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit films. She instantly captured everything I had always thought the Doctor was supposed to represent. The wisdom, compassion, strength, and age, all wrapped up in a bundle of energy and excitement over the wonders of the universe. I loved it all and couldnât figure out why so many fanboys were hating. After finishing this series, I went back to series 1, with the introduction of the Ninth Doctor. Iâve been working my way through ever since. And now Iâm beginning to understand why many were underwhelmed with series 11. Donât get me wrong, I still absolutely love Thirteen. Iâm still fond of Yaz, Ryan, and Graham. And there are many moments in this series that are downright awesome. But in comparison to past series, the writing is honestly pretty... ehhhh. Plots are fairly simple and predictable, and none of the characters really develop a ton. Besides, I think Jodie could achieve SO much more with the character if the writers and directors would give her half the chance. Let the Doctor finally get tired of having to stand by while the innocent are torn down, let her memories of past battles and loves and losses shine through for a few moments, let her new companions hear stories of those who came before. Let her somehow encounter a shadow from her past, whether it be an old companion, enemy, or location, and the true ancientness of the Doctor be glimpsed again. I donât want to doubt that the writers will clue in for series 12. I really do believe that awesome things are coming. I just hope that the writers realize how and why this series isnât all Doctor Who could be - not because of the actors, or the characters, and especially not because of the gender change. But because itâs capable of far more than itâs currently being given. Believe in your characters and fans, BBC. Donât water it down for us â give us the epicness this show and the first female Doctor deserve..Score: 4/5
Absolutely FantasticThis series is simply incredible. Although I was suspicious of Jodieâs casting as the newly regenerated 13th Doctor at first, like many others, she did not disappoint. Whittakerâs Doctor bears resemblance to the fun and quirky 10 and 11th Doctors but Whittaker adds her own uniqueness that separates herself from those Doctors. Her companions, Yasmin Khan: the police woman, Ryan Sinclair: the ex warehouse worker, and Graham Oâ Brien: The retired bus driver, add their own bit of flare and chemistry to the new season. Without them, the season truly wouldnât be the same. The only thing that could truly be improved throughout Whittakerâs era is the writing. Although most episodes are on par when it comes to the storyline, a few are completely off. However, you are only able to tell this after watching the episodes a handful of times; or at least I was. â˘â˘â˘â˘ Overall, I recommend season 11 of âDoctor Whoâ to new and returning fans of the show. It was quite an adventure to watch and throughly impressive..Score: 4/5

Fails to impressThe problem with Chibnall's run with the Doctor isn't that she's a woman, though I do have my opinion on whether it was really necessary to change the gender, it's that Chibnall doesn't understand who the Doctor is. The Doctor is the the Oncoming Storm, but also the best friend you can ever have. He has the biggest capacity for love in the universe, and also the biggest capacity for hate. Unfortunately, the 13th Doctor is lukewarm at best, and doesn't have a unique charm because she's trying to alternatively imitate David Tennant's or Matt Smith's Doctor. Also, I don't like that they practically never left the Earth to visit other worlds, and there was really no over-arching plot thread to connect the adventures together in any meaningful way. I also don't understand why the Doctor needed to change genders. There have been plenty strong, independent women on the show, and insisting that the Doctor HAS to be a woman for there to be gender equality on the show is rather insulting to the other female characters. Honestly, if the Doctor had changed into a black man, the change in dynamic would've been much more intersting. Imagine if the Doctor, as a black man, in the Rosa Parks episode. Just awfulI literally slept through half of this virtue signaling waste of money. In this series weâre introduced to Jodie Whittakerâs take on the Doctor and she clearly doesnât understand the character (and has admitted she didnât bother watching the show, like a true professional). I drew a smiley face on a plank of wood in my back garden and it gave a more convincing portrayal of the Doctor. Weâre also introduced to 3 new companions who are so devoid of character I actually canât remember their names and if they went missing from an episode I actually wouldnât notice. But as it stands we have a boy with dyspraxia, a girl who works for the police, and the host of Itvâs âthe chaseâ who is a bus driver. Thatâs literally all you need to know about them! Then thereâs what passes for writing ... well where to start here? Story is considered not to be important, but pushing the writers social and political messages are paramount. We go from one lecture to a next delivered by a plank of wood dressed as a hipster who seems incapable of breathing through her nose and so as a result we are treated to Jodie appearing out of breath all the time as she pants her way through her scenes. Now production value. Well the new tardis interior is just hideous, like Matt Smithâs series 5 tardis and Tennantâs tardis had a baby that was disfigured by nuclear fall out. The music that was one written by the great Murray Gold has now been replaced by a first year music student with a synth and very little talent or ability. While the cameras they use may be more expensive with higher resolutions the effects and cinematography is definitely worse than McGannâs TV movie, which is tragic that in this day and age we canât get something better than a failed proof of concept episode from 1996! All in all if you missed this season when it was one, you didnât miss anything, itâs still free on iPlayer if you want to torture yourself but donât part with your money for this absolute garbage.
