Thirteen = Brilliant!! Writing = Ehh.After years of people telling me I needed to try out Doctor Who, I finally decided to give it a go. Why? Because of this new series. I was intrigued to see if a show 50+ years running could successfully genderbend its main character while still keeping true to the heart of the character and the show itself. The Doctor has become an icon for geeks everywhere, and as a huge Star Wars, Tolkien, and general sci-fi/fantasy nerd, I have to appreciate that. Series 11 seemed like a great jumping-on join for a noob to get her start in the Whoniverse. I was absolutely right. I fell in love with Jodie Whittakerâs version of the Doctor almost immediately - her quirky mannerisms (and especially facial expressions) remind me somewhat of Martin Freemanâs Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit films. She instantly captured everything I had always thought the Doctor was supposed to represent. The wisdom, compassion, strength, and age, all wrapped up in a bundle of energy and excitement over the wonders of the universe. I loved it all and couldnât figure out why so many fanboys were hating. After finishing this series, I went back to series 1, with the introduction of the Ninth Doctor. Iâve been working my way through ever since. And now Iâm beginning to understand why many were underwhelmed with series 11. Donât get me wrong, I still absolutely love Thirteen. Iâm still fond of Yaz, Ryan, and Graham. And there are many moments in this series that are downright awesome. But in comparison to past series, the writing is honestly pretty... ehhhh. Plots are fairly simple and predictable, and none of the characters really develop a ton. Besides, I think Jodie could achieve SO much more with the character if the writers and directors would give her half the chance. Let the Doctor finally get tired of having to stand by while the innocent are torn down, let her memories of past battles and loves and losses shine through for a few moments, let her new companions hear stories of those who came before. Let her somehow encounter a shadow from her past, whether it be an old companion, enemy, or location, and the true ancientness of the Doctor be glimpsed again. I donât want to doubt that the writers will clue in for series 12. I really do believe that awesome things are coming. I just hope that the writers realize how and why this series isnât all Doctor Who could be - not because of the actors, or the characters, and especially not because of the gender change. But because itâs capable of far more than itâs currently being given. Believe in your characters and fans, BBC. Excuse You Rosa Haters! I â€ïž Rosa! The main idea of âRosaâ is exactly what Doctor Who was originally meant to be about! Not interfering. Witnessing events in history! Verity Lambert created Doctor Who to TEACH children about the past. That was Lambertâs intention when she created Doctor Who in 1963. When it first came out, The Doctor and his friends explore different events in history and witness them. Even though there was a threat, the Doctor did everything he could to make sure the event in the timeline stays on track! In âRosa,â when Graham asked, âAre we supposed to help her?â and the Doctor replied, âNo. Weâre supposed to not help this time...â I cried. What was this? After an ok first episode, we steadily go downhill. It is very boring. What was a fun, adventure show has become a preachy, after-school special. Jodie had potential but she doesnât really develop as a character of her own. She borrows way too much from the Tennant and Smith Doctors in her performance. The companions are just there, very lackluster. Graham is the only one that feels real. Unfortunately, they act as yes men and just follow the Doctor around. No questioning or challenging a character who has always dabbled in a greyish area, morality-wise. The scripts are not good overall, but for me, the biggest disappointment is just the utter boredom and uninterest this series has inspired in me after loving this show so much. Just awfulI literally slept through half of this virtue signaling waste of money. In this series weâre introduced to Jodie Whittakerâs take on the Doctor and she clearly doesnât understand the character (and has admitted she didnât bother watching the show, like a true professional). I drew a smiley face on a plank of wood in my back garden and it gave a more convincing portrayal of the Doctor. Weâre also introduced to 3 new companions who are so devoid of character I actually canât remember their names and if they went missing from an episode I actually wouldnât notice. But as it stands we have a boy with dyspraxia, a girl who works for the police, and the host of Itvâs âthe chaseâ who is a bus driver. Thatâs literally all you need to know about them! Then thereâs what passes for writing ... well where to start here? Story is considered not to be important, but pushing the writers social and political messages are paramount. We go from one lecture to a next delivered by a plank of wood dressed as a hipster who seems incapable of breathing through her nose and so as a result we are treated to Jodie appearing out of breath all the time as she pants her way through her scenes. Now production value. Well the new tardis interior is just hideous, like Matt Smithâs series 5 tardis and Tennantâs tardis had a baby that was disfigured by nuclear fall out. The music that was one written by the great Murray Gold has now been replaced by a first year music student with a synth and very little talent or ability. While the cameras they use may be more expensive with higher resolutions the effects and cinematography is definitely worse than McGannâs TV movie, which is tragic that in this day and age we canât get something better than a failed proof of concept episode from 1996! All in all if you missed this season when it was one, you didnât miss anything, itâs still free on iPlayer if you want to torture yourself but donât part with your money for this absolute garbage.
