Series premiere. San Francisco, 1878. Ah Sahm, a newly arrived Chinese immigrant with serious fighting skills, is introduced to Chinatown's most ruthless tong, the Hop Wei. After impressing Young Jun, son of tong leader Father Jun, Ah Sahm is branded and taken to the local brothel, where he befriends Ah Toy, a courtesan with connections. Later, in search of a woman who left China two years earlier, Ah Sahm crosses paths with Mai Ling and Li Yong, followers of the rival tong leader Long Zii, who is trying to avoid an opium war with the Hop Wei--a war that Walter Buckley, the deputy to San Francisco Mayor Samuel Blake, actively promotes. Meanwhile, after two Chinese laborers are killed by white thugs, police sergeant Big Bill O'Hara is tasked with creating a Chinatown squad. Enlisting a southern-born cop named Richard Henry Lee, Bill soon finds that the hostility between the Chinese and white dock workers is unlikely to end anytime soon..

Pop Culture Delight But Doubtful HistoryKudos to the creators of the series for trying to marry exciting contemporary visuals and narrative to an Asian-American history unknown to most of our fellow countrymen. For me, unfortunately, the history side of that marriage is almost beaten to death in favor of entertainment. While many of the facts are true about the arrival and exploitation of Cantonese speaking southern Chinese, and while the Tong societies created to help fellow immigrants were often taken over by criminal Triad elements, the way they're portrayed here comes off as simple-minded and cartoonish. I get that this is in part intentional, that history is given a kind of anime/video game/Wuxia treatment to make history exciting and reach a broader audience, but there's a point at which the style of a thing can overtake and crush the substance. Many of the attitudes portrayed are wildly anachronistic, reflecting our modern beliefs and but not at all those of the past. The dialogue often sounds more like a comic book or tv series than the way people actually speak. Lead character, Ah Sahm, is still fascinating and fun to root for. The show IS very entertaining! I guess if you let go of reality and just have fun with the show it's worth watching. I just think they could have done what they're doing with a little more respect for actual historical circumstances. For me, it would be more interesting that way..Score: 3/5

Probably the best Martial Arts action on TV minus the pornShame on Shannon Lee for letting the writers take her fatherās work and have to filthy it up with unnecessary nudity and pornography. There are too few actions shows like this as it is and this one is superb in its story and martial arts choreography but I personally can do without the other stuff. I know many donāt mind it and thatās why itās written in to the script. I hate that Iāll have to think hard about whether to get season 2 or not when it comes out..Score: 4/5
Black DragonI absolutely love this series. One of the best shows on T.V., Cable or Streaming. It has some of the best choreographed fight seems I have seen on TV or the movies. It is up there with Bruce Lee movies. In addition, excellent acting and very interesting story lines. Hopefully, it gets at least Four or Five seasons..Score: 5/5
