High hopes for captain JackFirst off, I paid for this (as I have all of them since series the reboot) as BBCA insert so many commercial breaks it makes it hard to follow the plot. So whatâs the first thing I see when I turn on my purchased from iTunes New Yearâs special? An ad, and one that I canât skip, we are not amused. I had really high hopes that the return of Captain Jack would bring back some of the magic and in small ways he did, it was great to see Captain Jack again. After dragging through the beginning I am happy for the return but just a bit disappointed again in the writing. Where is the fun where is the humor where is the magic?.Score: 3/5
No Show (then did)I waited all New Yearâs Day for this to show. Nothing. Huge disappointment. Great way to start the year Apple. So 20 minutes after I wrote that it showed. I watched it was well done. I like when Jack Shows. Was a bit sad. Looking for a bit of hope in these times, but that might be asking a bit much from my old friend the doctor. Captain Jack and Daleks!I enjoyed this episode more than a decent number of the season 10âs episodes. I felt it captured more of the adventure and swagger of the previous doctor. Captain Jack is also a treat, but would have loved to have more Torchwood Easter Eggs. Could we see a revival?.Score: 5/5

Not good enough. This is a half hearted special. They are known for being cheesy at Xmas/New Year. This was just off. Jodieâs acting capabilities have been and are wasted in this episode. Scenes felt incomplete and most certainly rushed. This may have been better if they had extended scenes allowing for plot development and maybe to have had a Xmas day and New Year special. Great episodeThis yearâs Special episode of Doctor Who is funny, exciting and somewhat emotional. Without spoiling too much we see an old friend return, a departure from the TARDIS team, some unexpected guest villains and the return of Chris Noth who really seems to be enjoying himself. For me personally this has to be one of the better episodes of Doctor Who from the 13th Doctorâs run⊠oh and watch the episode right up to the end as there is a post credits scene that sets up next season..Score: 5/5
AwfulBeen a fan and watcher of Doctor Who since the 70âs. Whilst there has always been the occasional poor episode this just adds insult. Not Sorry. The vast majority (if not all) of the people who rated this one star are sexist and/or racist. Doctor Who has always had political overtones. Literally think about the Cybermen for more than one second. Here Iâll give you a hint - every Cyberman looks the same and is equal. If you didnât notice either you need to start looking closer at the content you consume or you willingly overlooked them. Doctor Who has always had some bad writing/effects (not saying this episode is an example of either but some people are). Best Dalek Episode In Years & Poignant FarewellUnlike many other reviews and ratings, I am writing this after actually seeing the episode - how people can rate 1 star and slate it before the episode has either aired on TV or been made available on any media is a mystery to me! I hope people who have fallen out of love with Doctor Who for whatever reason give it another go - I thought season 12 was a real step up and this New Year special filmed before the pandemic was the icing on the cake which we were lucky to get! The story is both a continuation of last years New Years special (which is recapped briefly at the beginning) and also the end of season 12 where we last saw the Doctor imprisoned by the Jadoon and her companions back on Earth in another Tardis they donât know how to use. Chris Noth reprises his role billionaire Chris Robertson who is using Daleks (or so he thinks) for financial gain and he is joined by Dame Harriet Walter who is using them (or so she thinks) for political gain. The companions all know there is trouble afoot and try to warn Robertson, but their attempts are futile without the help of the Doctor. Enter Captain Jack, returning after the brilliant John Barrowmanâs brief and unexpected cameo in season 12. Can he help reunite The Doctor with Graham, Ryan and Yaz to help save the Earth once more? The Daleks pose a far more sinister threat in this episode and are truly scarier than they have been for many years. The only negative I can share is that the threat is neutralised far too quickly and this story could have easily benefited from being a 2-parter and expanded the story. On a sadder note, we say goodbye to part of the TARDIS team towards the end of this episode and although I think they will be missed, this show has always been about change and the reason it has lasted over 57 years is because of this constant evolution and reinvention. It was a nice touch to end the episode back where the journey began back in The Woman Who Fell To Earth. Finally, stay tuned until the end of the credits when the next companion is introduced, a very familiar face for viewers in the UK! Overall, a great episode. Jodie Whittaker knocks it out the park as usual conveying the Doctors emotions with great subtlety at times and unable to hold back at other times! Hoping for more of this in season 13! One note to BBC & Apple - I watched this on iPlayer in 4K HDR and it looked amazing, from the opening titles which appeared to explode off the screen through the whole episode.
