A quarter-life crisis causes a young Chinese American woman, Nicky Shen (Olivia Liang), to drop out of college and go on a life-changing journey to an isolated monastery in China. Nicky will rely on her tech-savvy sister Althea (Shannon Dang) and Althea’s fiancé Dennis (Tony Chung), pre-med brother Ryan (Jon Prasida), Assistant District Attorney and ex-boyfriend Evan (Gavin Stenhouse) and new love interest Henry (Eddie Liu) as well as her martial arts skills and Shaolin values to protect her community and bring criminals to justice…all while searching for the ruthless assassin who killed her Shaolin mentor Pei-Ling (Vanessa Kai) and is now targeting her..

Interesting but with a narrativeThis show had incredible potential in the first 4 episodes, which are intriguing and great. Then in the fifth episode it takes a sudden turn south into focus on political activism and promoting a certain narrative. I can watch those items on any news channel any time, it’s not what I tune into a tv show for. Unfortunately, this seems to be the case with most current tv shows coming out. Hollywood will just not let go of the momentum to use any show to politically and culturally brainwash..Score: 2/5

No one part of this works wellIt’s not that it has poor martial arts battles, nor that the acting doesn’t always sell a scene, or that the magical mcguffins are super fluffy on what they can and can’t do. It’s that there are so many things that don’t work and nothing that does. All of these elements were pulled from other stories and thrown in here without making them Work. The result is often frustrating as a CGI weapon will stretch and distort to hit so that the performers don’t have to know how to safely use the weapons they weld because they are waving around short cgi marker sticks instead..Score: 1/5
