Probably one of the best shows on TVInitially was skeptical because this is an adaptation of a video game and past adaptations have been bad. The best phrase to describe this is “horrifying, yet beautiful.” This show takes it to a whole other level, it’s INTENSE, being a apocalyptic horror-survival show, sticking to the source material where applicable, adapting where they need to, and deviating to further develop the characters or story (often in unexpected ways). Going on the premise of the unconditional love between a parent and child, the story shows how far a parent is willing to go and the things they will do for who they love. The continuity of the story is tight, events in the last episode reference what happened in the first ones, the characters are nuanced & complex, just like real life, & the cinematography and VFC are awesome (mostly, with a couple of missteps). Probably as equally profound is the podcast hosted by Troy Baker who plays Joel In the video game who interviews the game creator Neil Druckmann & show runner Craig Mazin (who did the Hangover sequels, Scary Movie sequels, and a small show called Chernobyl). Very deep insight into human nature (probably b/c Mazin has a degree in psychology) and delves deep into the characters, filling in the blanks from the episode because maybe you were too traumatized to notice..Score: 5/5

A solid adaptation and companion to the gameAs someone who has played the games multiple times over the last decade, I have a strong attachment to this story and these characters. I approached this adaptation with cautious optimism based on the involvement of Naughty Dog as opposed to the lack of involvement in the Uncharted film, and feeling reassured by the clear passion Craig Mazin exhibits when talking about the games. He sounded like someone who gets it on the level I did as a player. So it’s a relief that this series does a very good job of hitting the notes it needed to and feeling authentic to the source material without feeling too firmly tied to it. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey embody the characters of Joel and Ellie so well while bringing their own insight to the characters in a way that feels natural and like an extension of the games. The game and the series actually benefit each other quite well, with the game doing more to make the bond between Joel and Ellie feel stronger, and the show taking advantage of the passive nature of television to show different perspectives than the player character’s. For many reasons I still prefer the game if I had to choose, but I appreciate that the show is presented with an informed knowledge of the future of these characters, making some smart decisions that should help with the adaptation of the second game. The way the show handles the characters in the third episode is so much more effective than the game version, to where now, mentally, I insert the show version of those characters into my playthroughs of the game. The show is a great companion piece to the games and also works on it’s own incredibly well as evidenced by the people I watched it with as it aired, who had never played the games. They were far more affected and devastated by moments I was anticipating (and still devastated by). All in all, I hope this show marks a turning point in the amount of trust that is placed in the source material and the original creators when adapting things for television and movies. Because it’s so satisfying to see these things well translated and still managing to surprise fans and newcomers alike. I can’t wait for season 2!.Score: 5/5

It can’t be for nothingFor the uninitiated this series is based on a 2013 video game of the same name. It is one of the most faithful adaptations of a video game put to film. As a fan of the game I can tell you that they hit all of the major themes and plot points of the story. They did change a few minor things from the game, but I found the changes felt natural because what works in a game won’t necessarily work on film. If you haven’t played the game you get the full story and for fans of the game you get some brilliant additions integrated into the story that just add to the lore. The cast are absolutely brilliant. Everyone nails their character and adds another layer to the already great characters. The infected look amazing and are exactly what you expect to see. Funny enough the theme of the story is love. It can be beautiful and dangerous. They nailed it. Treat yourself to this..Score: 5/5
Freakin' Awesome Show! HBO Great adaptation of a video game.A big thank you to HBO for releasing this amazing TV show on iTunes so quickly. Sometimes greats shows like "The Last of Us" never make it to iTunes. I was never able to watch the series when it aired and have only watched the first episode and I have to say... WOW! what a way to start a series. I just wanted to point out that in episode 01 "When You're Lost in the Darkness" there is a hiccup/stutter in the video between 30:39 - 30:41. For me it's not a game changer, but it was noticeable. I can't wait to sit down and binge watch the entire season this weekend. Update April 12, 2023: This is just a quick update to my post on March 17, 2023 regarding the hiccup/stutter at 30:39-30:41 of episode 1. I downloaded the episode again and it has been fixed.
