From the day she was born, Marie was dealt a difficult hand in life. The 49-year-old Sophia Loren look-alike was born into an Italian-mob family in Harlem, New York. When her parents' marriage dissolved, Marie grew up without a father, and she and her mother struggled with extreme poverty. An incredibly smart woman, Marie wanted to go to college. But at the urging of her very traditional mother, she gave up her dream and got married at 17. Marie was unhappily married three times, but had three beautiful children. Determined to give her children everything she didn't have in life, Marie threw herself into building them up, but never truly found happiness until she became a successful matchmaker. Despite her own tragic love life, she was a master at pairing up strangers. Marie became a well-known socialite and gained national notoriety in a matter of months. She graced magazine covers and appeared on shows like 60 Minutes, 48 Hours and The Howard Stern Show. Then Marie met the love of her life, her fourth husband, Bora - an addict and alcoholic. Marie tried to clean him up, but ultimately he was the catalyst for Marie's own addiction to alcohol. Within a year of her wedding date, Marie slipped into full-blown alcoholism. She lost her business and became a falling-down drunk. Now, seven years later, her children and mother are at their wit's end. Bora died last summer due to complications with alcohol and Marie is headed down the same road -- fast. Marie's family knows an intervention is her last hope..

This is sickWhat's worse, a person addicted to drugs or a person addicted to a TV show that let's you get your rocks off watching other people suffer at their lowest. Hope it makes you feel better that someone else's life is more messed up than yours. This says a lot about our society..Score: 1/5
Well Done... But Sad and RepetitiveYou've read the description so you know what the show is about. I've only seen two shows so far - both were good but remarkably similar. It's so very sad to see anyone fall from grace into drug dependancy or some other trouble, but perhaps more so for those who really had everything to live for. The series does an excellent job at profiling the beginning parts of each story - how each life began with great expectations, surrounded by loving families and dreams... then they fall to temptation. The saddest part of the saga without question is the impact on the families who want to and need to love so much, but are so hurt by the actions of the son or daughter. I must say I didn't sympathize as much as I thought I would with those with the addictions - I just saw weakness, not addiction. Maybe that's unfair but it's difficult not to admit to this once you see the full episode. I don't know how many more of these I can watch, it's bound to get old. I can understand series like Cops where it's just comical, but this is just sad - over and over again. Try it a few times, but don't go for the series quite yet. I'm suprised to see they've had four seasons with this formula..Score: 3/5

A Sad Eye OpenerI have been watching this program religiously for some time now. It is a sad reflection on the tragic lives of these lost people and what may have driven them to such despair. What stands out time and again is the dichotomy that exists with the addicts' families. On the one hand, I see a lot of love, sometimes completely overwhelming the person. It is amazing that the chain of affection is, in most cases, unbroken by a loved one's addictive behavior. On the other hand, it is telling how much negative early life experiences can have on a person and the path that his/her life takes. Broken homes, favoritism and just plain bad parenting can have lasting lifelong effects. And there is often the terror suffered by a young person who had to endure sexual abuse. We are only human, and sometimes seek whatever method we can to dull our emotional pain. Out of all the episodes, the one I can most relate to is Brooke. A chronic pain sufferer myself (though I don't take anywhere near the medications she did and have only one physician prescribing my pills), I saw the abject fear in her eyes when she walked in the Intervention Room and realized what was going on. I can totally share with her the danger of perhaps having to give up medication which is allowing her to function, albeit precariously. To have severe chronic pain and no way to relieve it is the most horrible situation that sufferers can contemplate. An excellent series that addresses not only addiction but the darker areas of the human soul. A great job done by all involved with this production..Score: 5/5

They need to find the best one I have seenI was watching one the otherday and this girl was addicted to those air dusting cans. I understand addiction is a horrid thing having gone through some dependancies myself. But this one just took it for me. So she is sitting in graveyard and she looks at the camera and says "this is so peaceful" *shooosh* and proceeds to start inhaling the can. This is a great show and they have done a lot of good but this one felt wrong to me for some reason almost scripted but then again there is a lot of people that are just odd enough to try something like that.
