The classic tale of Spock's feverish Vulcan mating urge and mortal combat with Kirk features a host of new artwork for the Remastered edition that adds vistas of the hot planet never before seen on a television scale. The high-elevation nature of the pon farr ceremonial grounds echoes the landscapes of Vulcan of the later motion pictures, but only enhances the mood and the music of the classic tragic battle set up by Spock's manipulating childhood fiancé, T'Pring. Sharp-eyed fans will note the distant views of Spock's hometown -- an homage to artwork later used in "Star Trek: Enterprise" -- and a new setting for T'Pring's girlhood photo..

Better than the originalI'm not a purist when it come to restoring or even altering movies and TV shows. As long as the revision stays true to the original, it can be an improvement. In this case, the remastered visuals restore the color and contrasts, and the new special effects are closer to what Gene Roddenberry originally envisioned. Back in the 1960s, they never had enough time or money to do what they wanted, so in a sense, the remastering is like going back in time and giving the production staff the resources they never had. More than that, let us remember that these episodes originally appeared on broadcast television, before cable, satellite, and long before digital. I remember trying to move the antenna on the roof, trying to get rid of the snow and static, and even on a good day the picture would be fuzzy by today's standards. So, I encourage everyone to enjoy these remastered episodes with new special effects, a restoration of the original vision from the 60s that they never achieved in reality--until now..Score: 5/5

The Doomsday MachineExcellent!!! It's a little darker than the original version, but has cool enhancements that makes my favorite episode even better!! I'll begin by giving kudos to those responsible for remastering this Star Trek episode. The cool CGI really brings the planet killer to life and it's more realistic than the original. The original pales in comparison to the remastered version because back then, they didn't have access to the technology we have now. You can now see the planet killer pursuing the Enterprise on the viewscreen with the warp nacelles showing. This was never in the original version. The planet killer looks very real; in fact even scarier than the one in the original version. I highly recommend this episode to those who are fans of the original series. I'm planning to download the other episodes and enjoy them all over again!! Thanks!!!.Score: 5/5

THE BEST OF THE BEST!Star Trek, when my dad first showed it to me, has been my ultimate favorite TV show! I can't stop thinking about it, day and night, I think and dream about it: about what it would be like to be a starship captain, or a first officer, or a yeoman. I think it would be really fun! The Doomsday MachineBack in the 60's, Batman ran opposite Star Trek for awhile, and I was an avid Batman fan. One night the network preempted the show, and I decided to check out the "Star Trek" thing. The episode that aired that night was "The Doomsday Machine." After that hour, I never returned to the caped crusader. I simply can't believe what the digitally remastered effects shots have done for this already intense story. It became clear to me that Gene Roddenberry and company wanted to tell so much more, but didn't have the effects budget. The episode has really come to life. The planet killer itself is much more menacing, and I have to mention that William Wyndom's Commodore Decker is seen in a whole new light (at least he was for me.) Thanks so much, iTunes!.Score: 5/5

Not Ready YetI was waiting for season 2 and was delighted to see it available in HD and purchased it as soon as I saw it available on 9-MAY-2011. There was a problem in that the HD versions were not correctly identifed causing duplicate names in the TV listings where the second one downloaded was named by appending a 1 to it. I opened a ticket with the iTunes store about this and they have started an investagation. They also refunded my purchase on 11-MAY-2011 while they look into this. (Thanks!) As anyone who has purchased HD TV shows from iTunes knows they include both the HD and SD versions that only get listed once in the TV listings where you can choose to play the HD version on your computer while the SD version gets synced to your iPod. A very good design and implementation that is missing from this season. Once this problem is fixed I will be repurchashing this season as well as the other two seasons. A "Must Have" For Star Trek FansA "must have" for Star Trek fans. The digital remastering work is focused primarily on Enterprise and planet fly-bys, viewing screen content on the bridge, and some glass paintings and mats for large scenes (e.g., a landing part beaming down to an immense city-scape of ruins). They stay true to the spirit of the original series, while taking advantage of the latest CGI effects.
