The Immunity Syndrome (Star Trek: The Original Series (Remastered) - S2E18) recap & spoilers

1
1 star

One of the most bizarre and colorful episodes of Season 2 is a showcase for the Remastered edition, with an all-new 3-D approach to the giant spacegoing amoeba that dominates the story. The lifeform is not sentient but still deadly on a mass scale, consuming the Gamma 7A system, the Vulcan-manned USS Intrepid and anything in its path while draining nearby power sources. The Remastered look now gives Enterprise a true "nighttime" treatment while within the "zone of darkness" around the amoeba, and both Spock's shuttlecraft suicide mission and the starship itself now seem truly trapped within the amoeba in a host of more complex and scaled environments..

Awesome!Star Trek has always been the best sci-fi series because of its characters and intricate stories. Since I have reviewed the first season, I think I might as well review this one too. 1) Catspaw- a pretty good start to the season 2) Metamorphosis- You see, Star Trek: First Contact---------Zephram Cochrane wasn't a drunkard nor was he played by a different actor 3) Friday's Child- Nope.....not much of a fan of it, but I do admit that the effects were improved on this one (now the Klingon ship actually looks like a Klingon ship instead of a colorful blob on the viewing screen) 4) Who Mourns for Adonais?- back to the awesome again. Good 5) Amok Time- it's actually good and the effects are improved on (by the way, the effects added things from the Star Trek Animated Series.....which I am confused as to why you fans consider that noncanon while you consider Enterprise to be canon. I am also surprised that Apple did not upload the animated series....it's awesome!) 6) The Doomsday Machine- WHOA! Even though this was my favorite episode of the season I must admit something.....the original effects weren't that good. But, when the remastering came, it greatly improved the episode. Heck, it's now epic. Good job Paramount for the effects. 7) Wolf in the Fold- a pretty good episode and....wait, no. Scotty couldn't have killed that girl with a knife from Alpha Centauri....must have been someone from there with Jack the Ripper's spirit in them 8) The Changeling- I AM NOMAD! I like this episode 9) The Apple- you know, this one is pretty good 10) The Omega Glory- another good episode by the way.... 11) Journey to Babel- this episode was great already due to the inclusion of Sarek of Vulcan (portrayed by Mark Leonard....don't worry, he's no Romulan), the Tellorite (did I spell that right?), and the Andorians. We also got to learn a little more about Mr. Spock....goody. By the way, the effects for this one were improved, but still paying homage to the original. Get a look at the ship that battles the Enterprise at the end and you'll see what I mean 12) The Immunity Syndrome- pretty good 13) Assignment Earth- this episode is good and {sigh} I might as well point this one out. This was supposed to be a pilot episode to some spinoff show involving Mr. Sevens, which would have been interesting. Oh, if only it had been so. 14) Mirror, Mirror- Oh, yeah. You know about this awesome episode. This is the one that's been parodied, payed homage to, and ripped off so many times you will loose count. It's that good 15) A Private Little War- this one is great and by the way.....I actually like the Mugato (did I spell that right?). It's pretty cool 16) The Deadly Years- OK, enough with the awesome. It's ok, but not as great as these other ones 17) The Gamesters of Triskelion- OK, this one is also good. But, I am surprised they didn't remaster the image in the Thrall's window (still looks like the refinery from The Devil In The Dark) 18) By Any Other Name- this would have been just an OK episode if it hadn't been for Warren Stevens (Doc Ostrow from Forbidden Planet) making a guest appearance 19) Obsession- another OK episode....sheesh Kirk. Let it go already 20) Return to Tomorrow- another OK episode 21) I, Mudd- HARDCORT! HARDCORT FENTON MUDD! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? I HAVEN'T SEEN YOU IN ANOTHER EPISODE IN SOMETIME AND- [Mudd yells, "SHUT UP!"] [Slowly starts to shut up]- I...am....not...programmed....to.....respond...in....that- 22) Patterns of Force- not really a fan of it, but yet it's on the Best of Star Trek: The Original Series vol. 1 on iTunes [huh?] 23) The Ultimate Computer- M5 Tie-in. This episode is actually great. Also, this inspired the sci-fi films like The Forbin Project (did I spell that right?), Westworld, the Terminator films, and the Matrix due to the computer taking over aspect. The effects for this are greatly improved (though I am wondering how come the fleet of Federation ships fighting the Enterprise weren't varied in design instead of just the Constitution class ships? I guess those units must survive) 24) The Trouble With Tribbles- Oooh boy! This one is a riot and a great story. William Campbell ["Retired sir, just Squire Trelane now. And you may call me squire. Yes, I rather fancy that."] appears as the Klingon captain, Koloth (did I spell that right?). Also, the effects are improved with this one. 25) Bread and Circuses- not much of a fan of this episode....but we will see a certain guest star in season 3 later. Try to guess which one. 26) A Piece of the Action- uh....Jim. Please step out of the car before you kill someone with it. You are a terrible driver Bottomline, this season is superior to the first one. I will review the next and final season of the original Star Trek series. Live Long and Prosper..Score: 5/5

The Doomsday MachineExcellent!!! It's a little darker than the original version, but has cool enhancements that makes my favorite episode even better!! I'll begin by giving kudos to those responsible for remastering this Star Trek episode. The cool CGI really brings the planet killer to life and it's more realistic than the original. The original pales in comparison to the remastered version because back then, they didn't have access to the technology we have now. You can now see the planet killer pursuing the Enterprise on the viewscreen with the warp nacelles showing. This was never in the original version. The planet killer looks very real; in fact even scarier than the one in the original version. I highly recommend this episode to those who are fans of the original series. I'm planning to download the other episodes and enjoy them all over again!! Thanks!!!.Score: 5/5

A "Must Have" For Star Trek FansA "must have" for Star Trek fans. The digital remastering work is focused primarily on Enterprise and planet fly-bys, viewing screen content on the bridge, and some glass paintings and mats for large scenes (e.g., a landing part beaming down to an immense city-scape of ruins). They stay true to the spirit of the original series, while taking advantage of the latest CGI effects. Not Ready YetI was waiting for season 2 and was delighted to see it available in HD and purchased it as soon as I saw it available on 9-MAY-2011. I opened a ticket with the iTunes store about this and they have started an investagation. They also refunded my purchase on 11-MAY-2011 while they look into this. (Thanks!) As anyone who has purchased HD TV shows from iTunes knows they include both the HD and SD versions that only get listed once in the TV listings where you can choose to play the HD version on your computer while the SD version gets synced to your iPod. 1Amok Time - Star Trek: The Original Series (Remastered), Season 2 episode 1 spoilers, recap and reviews
Amok Time15 Sep 1967$2.99

The classic tale of Spock's feverish Vulcan mating urge and mortal combat with Kirk features a host of new artwork for the Remastered edition that adds vistas of the hot planet never before seen on a television scale. The high-elevation nature of the pon farr ceremonial grounds echoes the landscapes of Vulcan of the later motion pictures, but only enhances the mood and the music of the classic tragic battle set up by Spock's manipulating childhood fiancé, T'Pring. Sharp-eyed fans will note the distant views of Spock's hometown -- an homage to artwork later used in "Star Trek: Enterprise" -- and a new setting for T'Pring's girlhood photo.

4Mirror, Mirror - Star Trek: The Original Series (Remastered), Season 2 episode 4 spoilers, recap and reviews
Mirror, Mirror06 Oct 1967$2.99

The Star Trek "mirror universe" conjures up images of Spock's goatee, the captain's woman and dress daggers -- but the Remastered edition adds a few more touches as well. The routine landing party beam-up is snagged by a new smeary ion storm effect for Kirk, Scotty, McCoy and Uhura's entry into the savage parallel universe. New visuals especially enhance the cruelty of this dimension, with the agonizer and the agony booth both getting a creepier, more visceral CGI treatment. The "mirror" Kirk finds he has a sexy "captain's woman" and a "Tantalus field," that ruthless secret death machine he can turn on anyone remotely -- but will he ever get his people back home?

6The Doomsday Machine - Star Trek: The Original Series (Remastered), Season 2 episode 6 spoilers, recap and reviews
The Doomsday Machine20 Oct 1967$2.99

The Remastered edition brings an incredibly rich look to the biggest visual-effects episode of the original series, not only improving the visuals but clarifying the most active starship battle depicted in the 1960s. Investigating the loss of sister starship Constellation, the Enterprise stumbles across a huge alien superweapon that wrecked not only the lost ship but also entire planets in several solar systems -- and drove Commodore Matt Decker into a "Ahab complex" that threatens the Enterprise when he forcibly takes command. Now, see the sad wreckage of the Constellation in all-new detail, get a truer sense of scale with both starships, their shuttlecraft and the planet-killer, which gets an articulated treatment that truly enhances its robot-like mission of destruction. Remastered effects also let viewers truly see for the first time the choreography of the battle with each starship's strafing runs -- and there's even a new angle on the shuttlecraft departure.

7Cat's Paw - Star Trek: The Original Series (Remastered), Season 2 episode 7 spoilers, recap and reviews
Cat's Paw27 Oct 1967$2.99

Two alien scouts take form as a warlock and a witch/giant cat to oppose Kirk's crew, tapping into dark human icons that get the full Remastered treatment. Their landscape of Halloween and the paranormal now gets a full "dark castle" facade as well as clean-ups and tweaks everywhere. While struggling to discover the source of the pair's apparent transformational powers, Kirk wonders whether one alien's attraction to him is any more dangerous than the widening dispute between the two.

8I, Mudd - Star Trek: The Original Series (Remastered), Season 2 episode 8 spoilers, recap and reviews
I, Mudd03 Nov 1967$2.99

The return of conman Harry Mudd is not a heavy tale of obvious visual effects, but the Remastered edition gives this romp a beautiful new version of a ringed world for Mudd's Planet. Among the 500 androids who turned on Mudd is leader Norman, the Enterprise hijacker, and here his "android circuitry" and belly hatch are another highlight of the Remastered redos. Mudd teams up with Kirk and even Spock and the staff, of course, for a wacky show of illogic -- their only available weapon for escape.

10Journey to Babel - Star Trek: The Original Series (Remastered), Season 2 episode 10 spoilers, recap and reviews
Journey to Babel17 Nov 1967$2.99

One of Star Trek's classic tales sports our first look at Spock's parents, Andorians and Tellarites, Federation debate, terrorist raiders and covert assassins -- and the Remastered edition brings its special snap to all. With one envoy murdered and Spock's father Sarek the chief suspect until he has a heart attack, it takes a ruse by Kirk and McCoy to get the stubborn Spock into Sickbay to give blood for his father's surgery after Kirk is stabbed and unable to command. The Remastered version features an all-new detailed shuttlecraft landing in the hangar bay and the Orion spy ship, faithful to the original but finally seen in detail -- as well as the Enterprise phaser tracking system which tries to shoot it down.

11Friday's Child - Star Trek: The Original Series (Remastered), Season 2 episode 11 spoilers, recap and reviews
Friday's Child01 Dec 1967$2.99

A simple mission to secure mining rights with the nomads of Capella IV turns upside down when Kirk's party learns a Klingon agent has beaten them to the punch and sponsors a coup that overthrows the old ruler. When his pregnant wife is set to die as well, Kirk kidnaps her against her will in their escape attempt, and he, Spock and McCoy stay on the run long enough for the Capellans to realize the Klingons' deceit and change course. The young son, born amid both danger and humor, is restored to the throne and gets a special name, thanks to the Enterprise officers.

Wolf in the Fold22 Dec 1967$2.99

The mood and atmosphere can only be enhanced by the Remastered process when shore leave on hospitable Argelius II turns deadly: Scotty's ladyfriend is found stabbed in an alley and he is found holding the knife over her. Incredibly, Spock's research, witnesses, and two more murdered women eventually point to the murderer as the entity behind the original serial killer, Earth's "Jack the Ripper." The new vibrant look of the Remastered treatment is at its best as always, but be sure to look for the lights of cities on the planet's dark side, matching how the live action of the story all takes place at night.

15The Trouble With Tribbles - Star Trek: The Original Series (Remastered), Season 2 episode 15 spoilers, recap and reviews
The Trouble With Tribbles29 Dec 1967$2.99

Partly inspired by the work of the 1996 Deep Space Nine homage episode, "Trials and Tribble-ations," this Remastered edition sports an all-new Klingon D-7 ship, the reworked Enterprise CGI model debut and close-up details of Space Station K-7 in this classic Star Trek comedy. Klingons, poisoned grain, a loud-mouth Federation bureaucrat and a mealy-mouthed trader -- and his fuzzy, faceless heroes the tribbles -- are here in all their crisp, clear Remastered glory.

17A Piece of the Action - Star Trek: The Original Series (Remastered), Season 2 episode 17 spoilers, recap and reviews
A Piece of the Action12 Jan 1968$2.99

Star Trek's other tongue-in-cheek romp gets a more realistic planet look from space in the Remastered edition, as Kirk attempts to undo the unintended contamination of Sigma Iotia II a century earlier yields a mobster-like culture like 1920s Chicago. It's a perfect example of the reason for the Prime Directive of non-interference, but Kirk, with an incredulous McCoy and "Spock-o" in tow, decides the best way to heal the damage is to play the part of mobsters themselves -- even if it means learning to drive a car. Along with its crisper, more colorful look overall, the Remastered edition also features a new treatment for the one time we see ship-fired phasers on stun.
