Actors such as Morgan Freeman and Sam Waterston read the actual words of historical figures and help make these people come to life. It is a testament to Mr. Burns that this is such a captivating documentary with very little use of moving images - other than brief interviews with historians and a few film clips of people long after the war, almost everything is told with photographs and paintings from the period - and it is completely effective.
