This show gave me a headacheWith opening dialogue that includes phrases like ..."will I have po*n t**s" and "my moment in the spotlight s**ked some serious a*s", I was a bit taken aback, and had to check to see what it was I had just downloaded. Now, I'll guarantee you that if I spelled out completely every word in the previous sentence, I would not get this review posted on iTunes due to their rule against profanity and overtly sexual language. Odd, because those words are a direct quote from the Ep 1 opening dialogue of "Awkward". I guess it's ok to sell video that has the actors speaking the profanity/overtly sexual language, but I'm not allowed to write it in my review for fear of not being published. Interesting. But hey... I dealt with it, there's a lot worse out there, right? Well... a minute later I got to watch lead-character Jenna (a high-school girl) have sex in a janitors closet with a high school boy, and we learn was her first time, too. Hoo-ray for Jenna! What a tender, loving moment she can cherish for the rest of her life! And I get to watch it-- lucky me. Course, I didn't know it was coming, either, no pun intended. And honestly, had I known, I would have changed the channel-- before I got nauseous. The show is obviously trying to be "edgy" and "now". Sorry- to me it's just prurient for the sake of being... prurient. No doubt, the children that are allowed to watch it think its great, just a wonderful show. And why wouldn't they? The kid actors in the show are doing and saying things a lot of kids are still raised to believe are wrong. Parents, of course, have been depicted as "not getting it" for a few decades now, no big deal. But the "parents" in this show take it to the next level- they don't just "not get it"- they portray themselves as the intellectual - and character - equals of their children, and sometimes less. How fun! At least they'll never have the stress of being their child's- or anybody's-- role model. Yes, I know it's just a television show. Problem is, my kids and their friends see the actors behaving that way on television, and the television legitimizes the behavior. They don't see these people as paid actors, they see them as peers. As if we stupid parents aren't already worried about teen pregnancy, drug abuse, teen suicide, and sex between 15 year-olds- now a great show like this works real hard to normalize those behaviors. Awesome! Thank you so much MTV! You'll probably make lots of money on the show. But as a parent I'm so stupid and I just "don't get it", so at least I can promise you, none of what you earn will be my money. As a father of two daughters, watching this show gave me a headache..Score: 1/5
