Truly Just FineThis was my first iTunes tv series purchase. I usually just purchase movies. Matthew M had a character that was a bit annoying most of the time. I felt like I was watching his one of luxury car commercials where he is thinking out loud in some poetic and overly dramatic fashion. That became old and ... silly. And the cigarettes were ridiculous. Woody did a nice job. The dynamic with his family was well written and acted. That felt real. Lots of loose ends as far as the symbolic crime scenes. A backwoods WHITE inbred family who live in filth but are practicing beautifully done Santeria rituals? - And why waste time on the tent revival ministries? And then a quick wrap up (as in how do we end this thing?). I actually enjoyed the cameos by the lesser well known actors who just had tiny story lines. The transitions of time and space worked well as sometimes these sorts of jumping storylines can become frustrating. Not here. Still was worth 15 bucks of my time. Yet I kinda forced myself through it. Episode 4 with the gang stuff was SO crappy and all together unnecessary. I want to buy season 2 but it seems to be getting worse reviews. And that's my jaw jack as I just finished the season tonight..Score: 3/5

Top-quality and powerful - itâll haunt youMuch like the bayou it is set around, the story meanders leisurely at first, stealthily picking up itâs pace until it hits the main stem and by then youâre in for the ride! True Detective, S1 has the kind of darkness that sneaks up on you at 2 a.m. when the night sky is blacker than black and you suddenly realize itâs just a little too quiet outside. Intensely disturbing subject matter is made bearable by being delivered with integrity and a solid moral reflection. The writing, direction, acting, and cinematography are all first-class in their own stratums and combine into a singularly compelling piece of cinematic mastery..Score: 5/5
Falls Short of GreatItâs good; certainly worth a careful watch. The characters? I preferred the acting role of Matthew rather than Woody. I found Woodyâs role (and his wife) too typical and Matthew's some what interesting. The editing and recalling past events yet again the director and editor are trying to be convoluted and avant guarde when that wasnât really necessary regarding the plot in such detail. I liked the way it captured the Bayou, and the actual representation of âpolice workâ was accurate â itâs boring until the fighting starts. My criticisms are relatively minor â still a good watch..Score: 4/5

A little less than wow now...I am going to have to downgrade my rating a bit now that I have watched the whole series. Its good in lots of ways but falls flat in places - like a teenage boys fantasy of things. For example, all of the female characters are a real lost opportunity and took me out of the story. Are you telling me that THREE complete bombshells are just dying to be with gross old copper Woody Harrelson? I am so not buying it. I also dont buy that Woody is under 40 in the flashback scenes. That should have been adapted..Score: 4/5

Beyond descriptionWhat you may perceive as a detective drama series turns out to be an in depth analysis of interpersonal relationship between both detectives over a 15 years period. In a nut shell at the begging you have your own theory but as you watch the episodes you just stop thinking and start enjoying a story that seems to have a life of its own. Ps. MesmerisingI decided to watch this show based on several YouTube film critics such as Chris Stuckmann and Schmoes Know recommending it. I blazed through all 8 episodes over the course of two days and could not stop watching. Unlike other shows, where I feel I need to give myself a break from watching it, True Detective, thanks to its beautiful atmosphere and stellar acting, especially from the 2 leads, kept constantly intriguing me. Absolutely superb âïžWatched this series over a week as I'd missed it on its original run. This is quite possibly the best thing I've seen in years! That includes all TV and movies (and there's a lot of good stuff out there). From the writing to the characters to the tone of the story. The story is layered and detailed and you don't know where it's going to take you. The acting is top notch with the main characters and Matthew mcconaughey is superb. This is the best performance I've seen in ages and I never liked really him in things before this. Not to also mention how great woody is too and the support. Trust me and watch this as soon as you can and then watch it again..Score: 5/5
