They include real life details like missing children and how kids behave during a class trip; for example, they are taking selfies and talking about the teachers. It is both realistic and a science fiction fantasy at the same time, which is what makes it so interesting. The relationship between Clara and the Doctor is complicated which adds to the intrigue. Season 8, the latest in the sagaIn general, Series 8 is another good, strong Doctor Who season. Pater Capaldi is brilliant though the change, at times, from Matt Smith is jarring. âJarringâ, by the way, isnât a bad thing in itself, it just is. The series gets off to a rough start and has some twists and turns but overall, itâs worth investing your time, and since this iTunes, your money. The series long arc isnât as strong as say in series 5 or series 6 but itâs good, not awesome or amazing but good, In many ways this series feel as though Moffat was phoning it in a little. Itâs very formulaic and Moffat is clearly, consciously working to be more like old school Doctor Who in many ways. The bright spot in this series is Jenna Coleman who, after some hit or miss episodes with Matt Smith, really comes into her own and makes this series much better than it would have been without her. Finally, thereâs the unrelated to the content issue of the way BBC America and iTunes continue to distribute this content to customers. It arrives some twelve hours after being broadcast in the UK (six hours after being broadcast in the mainland US). Yes, youâll get the Saturday episode Sunday morning at 3:30 a.m. Itâs an insult to those of who buy these episodes. It also appears you wonât be getting the xmas episode included with this season which, while not surprising given the overall abuse of those of us who pay to watch this show, is still sad. And yes, youâll pay for it and not be able to watch it on xmas. Youâll watch at 3:30 a.m. the next day. Lucky you, merry xmas. I never thought I would type these words but given all the changes and the continued abusive manner in which the show is distributed, I donât see myself buying new series of Doctor Who. Review of the entire seasonI decided to write the review after watching the entire season. My favorite episodes of the season include âListenâ, âTime Heistâ, âThe Caretakerâ, and âMummy on the Orient Expressâ. Those episodes made the season worthwhile. Peter Capaldi as the Doctor, the Special Effects, and the music was fantastic. I even somewhat enjoyed Missy as the Master, though I was hoping more that she would be the Rani. The writing, in my opinion, let me down, especially after the previous seasons with Matt Smith. In fact, every time there was a reference to the 11th Doctor, I became very nostalgic. Though Peter Capaldi is great, I canât seem to enjoy this doctor as rapidly as I did the previous doctors. For example, Matt Smith and David Tennant captured me in their first episodes, and Chris Eccleston had me by the second episode. Paul McGann, in his Webisode, made me wanting more (I really wish they would do the honor of tying in the 8th doctor a bit moreâŠPaul was great). I was even drawn into the War Doctor, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th doctors immediately. My problem has more to do about choices in writing. For example, though Danny Pink is a relatively enjoyable character to watch, his apparent disrespect for officers (though perhaps justified) has questionable ethics to authority. Also, if we are going to explore Bible ideas (paradise, afterlife, and things of that nature), letâs have some accurate Bible knowledge. I also thought that the timeline with Danny Pink just got a paradox (see âListenâ), unless Clara is pregnantâŠwhich then leads to other moral issues, or there will be a future explanation in which maybe Danny Pink comes back (like Rory). I did not enjoy Clara and Dannyâs relationship because of their recent comparison with Rory and Amy. Rory and Amy in my opinion was fun for several reasons. They did love each other; they had their problems, but in the end, they chose to be with each other and proved it with many sacrifices. Rory seemed to get better with every episode, and when he was touched by an angel, I felt emotional at the loss. Clara, though a great companion, I felt was not shown the proper respect in the fact that she had saved all regenerations of the doctor by traveling through his timestream. Also, though I think âFlatlineâ was a fun exploration as Clara playing the role of the doctor, she is not the doctor. She is a companion, and the doctor needs a companion as elegantly explained by Amy in âA Town Called Mercyâ. I think the final episode was a let down. No great âout-thinkingâ. I felt the doctorâs role was almost questionable. Dannyâs face did not need to be so drastically altered as a Cyberman (I could not take him seriously). No relevant role for the kid whom Danny killed (wouldnât that had been great if they had partnered up some how). Stewartâs assistantâs death, in my opinion, was needless. I liked her character since the Day of the Doctor, and to see her die seemed unfortunate. Maybe they can find a way to bring her back. Finally, where is River Song? At then end, I feel the doctorâs alien attributes best serves him off the planet earthâŠso Iâd like to see episodes that put the doctor in more alien settings with only sporadic visitâs to earth (like in the Caretaker). At least Lethbridge Steward got his salute (finally showing some respect to officers, and well-deserved)..Score: 3/5

Dr Who Magic writer has lost his museI have been a Dr Who Fan since the 70âs. I grew-up watching Tom Baker. I did not need great special effects or high budget sets. The writing made this show great along with the Doctors. I feel like the head writer and producer; Steven Moffat, has lost his interest in the show. Itâs almost like heâs been spending so much time on his new show Sherlock Homes that he does not have time for Dr. Who any more. Maybe he thinks the show does not need him. The magic that was once there is gone. The writing feels disjointed. The stories donât work or just feel rushed. There was only one good episode this season, which was a two part episode. Unfortunately the second part did not even connect to the first part. It felt like two different people wrote the episode without talking to one another. I hope Dr Who gets it muse back. Fine Acting with what was givenThis season reminded me of some of the classic series - that some Doctors were not as likeable as others. Capaldi is a fine actor with what he was given as a character, but it is a far narrower character and one that is only really enjoyable when others need to bail him out. Clara is much more enjoyable as a person than his character, and following her revelations in The Name of the Doctor and The Day of the Doctor, you now have an incarnation of The Doctor that shows her no respect, even though she has shown the importance of her wisdom repeatedly. Far enough into the series to review? We have had eight episodes now, and the twelfth Doctor's tenure is now almost fully established. I was skeptical about Capaldi playing the Doctor when it was announced and the episodes so far have done little to allay those fears. Capaldi hasn't got the youthful exuberance of Smith or the charm of Tennant and Ecclestone. He is however quieter, more subdued. This benefits the show greatly as other characters are able to shine. Jenna Coleman has, in my eyes at least, established herself as the best companion that the Doctor has had since the show's return in 2005. Guest stars such as Hermione Norris and Frank Skinner have had room to really shine. Barring one or two misfires, the writing has been a huge step forward. Not since series 5 have we had such wonderful story-telling. Into The Dalek is the first time something original has been done with the Daleks in my lifetime (I was born in '87). Kill The Moon was brooding and tense. The Caretaker was fun and light but full of character development. The only real let down has been Gatiss' Robots Of Sherwood, which missed the mark completely. Gatiss has done some incredible work recently on Sherlock and with An Adventure In Space And Time, but his Doctor Who work has never done it for me. Although I usually find that Gatiss' scripts are full of big Ideas that are poorly realised on screen, I found that I didn't like the characters, the plot or the dialogue of this year's contribution. Overall a good series that feels like it is preparing the groundwork for the coming few years... whether that future includes Capaldi and Coleman is yet to be seen, but there is plenty of room for a rallying finale.
