Thoughtful comedy about identity'Black-ish' is a thoughtful intergenerational comedy about the complexity of retaining one's identity in America. It focuses on the particular issues faced by an upper middle class black family, but it could be any family. So much potentialThings I like about the show: the cinematography, the setting, the economic status of the family. Things I disliked about the show: it was riddled with racial references (hence the title). Overall: unfortunately this show picks up at the point where the Cosby Show began to lose its appeal - which is trying to be too "real". The original appeal of the Cosby Show was that it was a comedy with a "successful" family that happened to be Black, going about their everyday, interesting lives. It expanded the view of most African Americans and painted a picture of us in another light. Then after criticism of not being "relatable" to African Americans, the storylines began to change to more "urban" themes. And to me, that's when the show began to lose its appeal. It no longer stood out, but began to re-tell the often painful stories of urban life that many African Americans know all too well, because we lived them. With the show taking this new approach, we had lost our place of "escape" via the Huxtable househould every Thursday night. To me, 'Black-ish' is simply picking up exactly where the late episodes of the Cosby Show left off; just with a more modern day twist. And with the title being what it is, it looks like it will be pretty difficult to adjust some of those nuances..Score: 3/5

What a great actress. ā€œSomeone tell my hair and buttā€ā€¦hahahahaā€¦I am happy to see a black mainstream comedy on ABC and will gladly spend my money for the privilege. Just as I loved Margaret Choā€™s comedic sitcom back in the day, I love this one. But most of all, it is just another HUMAN experience. And I am all for diverse HUMAN experiences..Score: 5/5

Spot On!This show is very timely in its exploration of multi-generational perceptions of blackness. Because we were systematically cut-off from our heritage, what it means to "be Black" has taken on varied meanings based on our knowledge, experiences and/or connectivity.
