Director Antoine Fuqua brings his modern vision to a classic story in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’ and Columbia Pictures’ The Magnificent Seven. With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), the desperate townspeople, led by Emma Cullen (Haley Bennett), employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns – Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington), Josh Farraday (Chris Pratt), Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), Billy Rocks (Byung-Hun Lee), Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier). As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money.

Entertaining movie for unusual evening
Meh, decent western worth one watch (prefer original).
Many say this movie disappoints in reaching the heights of the original. Yes, the original is a classic that will never be forgotten. But this one, is something else. Whereas the original provided a complex moral tale, this film simplifies the story to a classic Good vs. Evil standoff. But what this film truly brings is who the characters are. Are they flashy? Are they heroic? Are they the bona fide superheroes? No. They are flawed, drifting stray dogs; they are the outcasts of their kind. The poetry in the last guys you'd expect saving a town, suddenly laying down their lives for a selfless cause, is cause enough for this movie to succeed. It is a story of hope, justice, and brotherhood. There are moments that cause disbelief, but the original did too, believe me. No film is perfect. But the heart of the story is essential, and the heart of this one inspires selflessness. The cast is great, the pacing is great, the villain is slimy, the action is entertaining, and the story is poetic. This is a western that does what westerns did best; serve as well done parables. Well done indeed.
If you like action, humor, attitude, heroes, villians, westerns, gun fights, you'll enjoy this one. Not sure what the negative reviews were about. It was a fun movie
A hollow facsimile of the original
Just cannot believe how bad this movie really was ... incredibly bad acting, right from the first shot fired.
I like so many of these actors and overall I'd say it was a reasonably good film, but the pacing lagged at many moments. I guess I was expecting to be rivited and at times my attention was really wandering.
rented it, and it won't play, or won't resume download.
Whoa! This was pretty bad. Good actors so one has to blame it on the director. I am reminded to read the reviews before I put out my money again.
It didn't replace Pale Rider as my favorite all time western but I thought it was an outstanding remake. If you liked the original as I do, don't go into this movie comparing the two. Apples and oranges. But as a stand alone western ? Really well done. I will actually buy this one. I had doubts about Mr. Washington bringing off an action movie of this calibre until I saw the Equalizer remake,( again a huge fan of the original series ) , saw that and gave this one a try. Both are well worth the watch. Just wish I had seen both on the big screen.
It's barely watchable. Mr. Washington, Mr. Hawke, et al, (fine actors, for sure) just don't pull it off. But that's more the director's fault than the cast. Mr. Fuqua, as writer and director, obviously tried to get far too much into the chaos of a boring, time-worn plot and cast all the characters in paper mache and cardboard. Talk about stereotypes...! So, the characters come off stilted and flat, especially the drunk Irishman, the Commanche and the evil mine owner trying way too hard to give us an evil squint of vicious indifference. And the pretty lady who motivates the whole thing has too many buttons undone. Bad as a period piece and all-over pretty bad, really. Did I say it was pretty bad? I expected much more than I got.
I rented it, started watching it, got about 20 minutes into it then all of a sudden it just stopped, stopped downloading and everything. It only gives me an option to buy or rent, and when I try to rent it again it says I've already rented it.
