The Magnificent Seven Description

Director Antoine Fuqua brings his modern vision to a classic story in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’ and Columbia Pictures’ The Magnificent Seven. With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), the desperate townspeople, led by Emma Cullen (Haley Bennett), employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns – Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington), Josh Farraday (Chris Pratt), Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), Billy Rocks (Byung-Hun Lee), Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier). As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money.

Seven men from the western United States band together and form the law in a town that, for better or for worse, needs their protection from the lawlessness of the west. They consist of an infamous gunslinger, an ex-bounty hunter, a smooth-talking con artist, a young eastern amateur, a womanizing gunman, a freed slave turned healer, and a former preacher seeking penance.

Many say this movie disappoints in reaching the heights of the original. Yes, the original is a classic that will never be forgotten. But this one, is something else. Whereas the original provided a complex moral tale, this film simplifies the story to a classic Good vs. Evil standoff. But what this film truly brings is who the characters are. Are they flashy? Are they heroic? Are they the bona fide superheroes? No. They are flawed, drifting stray dogs; they are the outcasts of their kind. The poetry in the last guys you'd expect saving a town, suddenly laying down their lives for a selfless cause, is cause enough for this movie to succeed. It is a story of hope, justice, and brotherhood. There are moments that cause disbelief, but the original did too, believe me. No film is perfect. But the heart of the story is essential, and the heart of this one inspires selflessness. The cast is great, the pacing is great, the villain is slimy, the action is entertaining, and the story is poetic. This is a western that does what westerns did best; serve as well done parables. Well done indeed.

One of the worst movies I have ever watched. Couldn't hold a candle to the original. Even though I didn't expect it to match the original M7 it was just down right poor. Terrible acting, terrible script, everyone getting shot with guns and arrows 10 times and still not dying. Denzel, how could you be involved with such a poor movie ???

A Disjointed catastrophe of a movie that reeks of cliche westerns where the director did a disservice to talented actors. A director who had limited knowledge of the western frontier invoking his fantasy view of the 1800's rather than seeking a realistic portrayal of a great fictional story. I want my 2 hours back. Where can I can my 2 hours back. Denzel's Washington's overzealous performance was most disappointing.

I'm rating the iTunes Store. I rented the movie but couldn't watch it because it was going to take 13 hours, then 21 hours, finally 31 hours to download even at 720p. Others I've watched nearly immediately on the same router and network. At this rate I may not live long enough to watch it.

Less than average plot, Chaotic violence, mediocre acting, terrible dialogue. Didn't even finish it. It's loud, stupid, and annoying.

Nothing we havent seen. None of the characters had any development whatsoever. I did not care about what happened to them at any point during the movie. The script was bad, and the acting was actually ok. I guess they were trying to make the most out of a bland, unoriginal story. Thumbs down.

There has been a recent change in the SD vs. HD. Not only have rental prices gone up for both, but SD is now presented in a weird TERRIBLE resolution with screen going totally pixelated on and off. Like to show you, this is what you could have for an extra dollar. So annoying! Exactly as Apple planned I'm sure. I'm done. There are other options for watching on line. Adios Apple. You just lost a long time customer. Penny wise and pound foolish decision.

This film had a throw back feel to the "feel good" type of movies where the anti-hero characters stand up for the little guy. It doesnt have the gut-wrenching moral narrative that is required to be "great" these days, but it is a fun movie to watch. Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke always have a great dynamic between the two. I think this film shows the fantastic range that Vincent D'Onofrio has, he always seems to transform his essence into the character he is playing. Overall, this is a fun, "modern" western to watch. perhaps not as good as the original films, but I think anyone who likes this genre and these actors would like this film. Id say it is definitely worth a rent.

I was excited about this movie so I preordered it....wish I would have rented it from Redbox and saved some cash. The movie was just average, I figured it would be amazing because I love the actors. Sorry but just ok worth a rental not a purchase.

I think it should be mentioned that this story is an adaptation of Akira Kurosawa's " Seven Samurai" !

If you're interested in the western genre it's as good as you'd expect. Washington and Pratt (and a few others) keep it from being below average. If you're just seeing it for those actors and don't love Westerns, you may not enjoy it as they aren't really utilized to their full potential. Action is good, storyline is fine, dialogue scenes are surprisingly weak given the talent.

Maybe it was the lower expectations. Maybe I was just in the mood for a western. But either way, this is a GREAT movie. NOT Citizen Kane great. Just a great movie. Denzel is a brilliantly subtle good-guy who is a bad-man. Pratt is perfect as subtly comic relief. But Vincent D'Nofrio deserves an Oscar for this performance. In nearly every performance, you see glimpses of the actual actor in the character being played. It was five scenes in before I realized it was him. And that's only because I had seen the opening credits. Small spoiler alert!!! Best line from the movie is Faraday saying "I believe that bear was wearing people clothes."
